Hello All,

I am new to this forum and relatively new to golf as well. I have been playing regularly for the last 6 months. I have been using Dunlop golf clubs that I purchased a few years back from a local sporting goods store (Big 5 Sporting Goods). I had no issues with the club; I really did not have any comparison to other clubs. While playing today, I broke my 5 iron and my PW and 7 looks pretty used as well.

I have been thinking about buying a used iron set for a while now and I think with my 5 iron broken, now is a great time.

I don't know too much about clubs so wanted to check with you to see what your recommendation will be.

I am planning to buy used and my budget is around $250. I am looking for 3-PW (and if possible SW & LW). I was looking at different sites and there are lot of options so not sure which will be right for me.

-Should I go with steel shaft or graphite shaft? I know it is based on the individual so I might have to try both and see what works.

-I have heard that Callaway, Taylormade, Ping, Cleveland all make great clubs. How about Callaway x-18? I saw a couple of used that fits my budget. Are there others that fit my budget that you recommend?

Any ideas/recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Ben Hogan Colonials, X18 or X20s, Wilson Staff Di9s ... all good cavity back irons which should fall into your price range new if you can still find them.

In my bag ... 12 year old Balvenie DoubleWood

If you can track them down, Cobra FP 2008 3-AW.  Solid set of clubs that are forgiving yet still allow you to work the ball.

Here is aninternet sites that I  have dealt with and theyhave a great site to buy used clubs .  If you are young and have a fast stick with steel.  Older and slower swing go with graphite I would howver, make sure you get an with cavity backl.  Any questions, please ask.

Thanks for the response everyone. I am not sure if I should go with Graphite Shaft or Steel Shaft. I am leaning more towards Graphite but not sure if I should go with Regular Flex or Steel Flex. I don't know what my swing speed is; I have not measured it in a golf shop.

I know you can measure it approximately by the distance you hit on the driver. The problem though is consistency; since I am relatively new to golf, I don't have consistency and I am not able to hit 8 or 10 shots with the driver in the same distance range to calculate average. Some of my shots go 225 yards, some I slice and some don't get the right contact.

Not sure how to judge my speed and get the right shaft.

Thanks again!

Above is from your first post. And, you mention in your second post that consistency is a problem.

Why not get a couple of lessons, and then buy new irons? The pro, after seeing you swing and where it needs to go, could help you find some irons. In your situation, you want to check out the irons in person, and test-hit them, to see if they work for you. Try out different models.

Of irons you mentioned, the X18s and X20s would be worth looking at. They are cavity back, and the stock versions have Uniflex steel shafts, about halfway between S and R in flex.

As for steel vs. graphite, it depends a lot on you. Graphite shafts are lighter, and don't put as much strain on your hand and elbow tendons as steel shafts. (Graphite absorbs the shock a bit better). If you have good clubhead speed, you might like steel better for more control. Steel shafts come in the general categories of heavy, medium and light (weight in grams), and this has an impact on your clubhead speed.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

All the OEMs in your post make excellent clubs. I'd agree with WUTiger, take a few lessons and get some help sorting through your questions. You may spend a few more $$ up front, but worth it in the long run. Reality is you want decent and forgiving irons, and they all make them, that work for you - right shaft, lie and lofts. Also, consider a set that goes from 4 - GW. A lot of sets don't come with a 3 anymore as a lot of people struggle with the 3 iron. Also, GW sits nicely between your PW and SW. Just a thought. Good luck

I went to the range the week before last, even though I took it easy no significant pain occurred just a slight twinge when I swung my #4 hybrid. The most encouraging news was no soreness the next morning. However I think switching back to graphite shafts is definitely gonna happen, my mp15's were fitted with X shafts and having something lighter will help.
