Lately I have been hitting the ball all over the place and I could use some advice. I am a former competitve golfer (hs and college) and my last few rounds have been (46-35 (1 under on back)), 44-38.

observations:

^divots go from open to closed
^fell jammed through the hitting area, open and moving back or away from the ball (ball fade - thin).
^ball rolls up face sometimes on irons sometimes and I come up short
^divots point left

In the past I have always stuggled with being too upright and steep causing pulls.

I would assume that "flipping" causes the open-close divot and I am getting the club stuck behind me and my spine angle posture need work.

Any tips or drills?

How can a divot go from open to closed?

I guess it's right-to-left (for a right handed player?)

Sounds like your swing plane is outside-in. Simplest drill is to place a tee about 2" behind the ball, about 2" outside. Make sure your club doesn't hit it. This will "make you" come more the the inside. More than that - a short 1/2 hr check up with PGA Teaching Pro might do miracles for you

How can a divot go from open to closed?

The divot is like if I'm facing ---> the first divot is straight the second is mine. Keep in mind the bend is the club grabbing the turf with the face open then closing creating the 1/4 circle. The curve is not quite as severe is this example. | )
