Not much information for us to go on... Where do you live? Do you have golf shops in your area where you could get fitted?

A good fitter can make sure you get the right club design and shafts to fit your build, swingspeed and swing characteristics. Many golf shops have good used clubs for sale. If you're going through the effort of getting new clubs, make sure they fit your game needs.

Focus, connect and follow through!

You have 3 SGI sets and one player's set listed, so I guess I would say "How well do you hit your current irons and what are they?"  Depending on your current set's configuration and how you hit them would be the decision maker.

One thing that I've found, even at my current higher handicap is that Game Improvement Irons like the bottom 3 you listed have a ton of offset in them.  I learned to play with a set of older irons that had no offset in them.  So when I went to buy a set of irons brand new for the 1st time, I wanted something more forgiving, so I went towards the Game Improvement irons and bought a set for cheap off the internet based off a static fitting.  BIG MISTAKE!!!!!  With all the offset in the GI club, I turned into a low hook monster with irons.  After about 3 months with them and still struggling, I drove 30 miles to a certified Mizuno fitter and was properly fitted for a set of clubs.  Ended up with the MP-57's, which were their current cavity backs at the time, which have very little offset and never looked back.  Even though they were supposed to be "above my playing level" (I was a 28 handicap at the time) I immediately improved on the course.  No more low duck hooks at all.

So my advice based on my experience (and $600 wasted on a set of irons) is to find a place that is a certified fitter and go and hit everything you can properly fitted for you.  If I would have stuck with what I was "supposed" to be playing, I would still be out on the course struggling with irons when now they're the best part of my game.

Hi guys, sorry was a bit minimal on the description I was bit short lol. Well I currently hit a 7 iron consistently bout 180 yards if tht helps I don't know swing speed off hand. I hit my current irons very well 8/10 I would say I'm looking for more control in the new irons as I would say I have plenty of distance already as I hit the ball well anyways. . I live in Cornwall and there isn't many shops tht do fitting tht I know of I have been looking to buy off golf direct as they do custom fitting and they ask you a load of questions on height, swing speed etc. is there an other details you guys would like to know to help me choose a set. I know it's hard to recommended a set as I do need to try clubs but I don't know anywhere near me tht I can try unfortunately. Thanks for the replies look forward to hearing replies cheers james

180 yard 7 iron?

The average on the PGA Tour with a 7i is 172 yards of carry and 90 mph swing speed.

Most amateurs hit a stock 7 iron shot 150-160 yards.

Oh rite my driving range must be in accurate on the yardage sorry I can only go on tht I'll go up there this week and check with them to see if it's right if not I'll try and get to another one and hit some balls etc. sorry to sound like a right idiot lol. I certainly don't hit like a PGA tour lol. I would say I hit it bout 160ish as a lot of ppl I play with say I hit the ball very long for an amateur. Cheers

I have a friend who hits his 8 iron 180, and he's nowhere near a tour pro.  He's a pretty bad golfer actually... but he crushes the ball.  When I was in college (many years ago) and in the best shape of my life (worked out all the time as a football player) I was easily putting a 7 iron out there 170 and I was roughly a bogey golfer.  Point being, just because tour pro's average 170's for a 7 iron doesn't mean the average Joe can't put it out there that far, or farther.  Maybe the guy does put it out there farther than most of us hacks... or tour pros.

Anyway, as far as clubs are concerned it sounds like your set is working decently for you if you're shooting anywhere from 10-17 over.  What about your game in general?  Where are you losing strokes (off the tee, putting, around the green)?  Find out what your weakness and put in some work to fix it.  In the meantime, play to your strengths and go out to the golf shops in your area to try out what clubs feel best to you.  Take your time to find the right set.

If your friend is hitting an 8 iron 180 yards, and a bad golfer, he's more than likely delofting the club through impact in order to get those distances.  I wouldn't want to hit an 8 iron 180 yards, that kind of defeats the purpose of having the rest of the irons.  That would mean on most par 4's you'd be hitting driver and wedge into the greens.

And for the record, I never said he wasn't hitting his 7 iron 180, my comment was made because he said he didn't know his swing speed.  So if he was getting 180 yard 7 irons, he's either swinging an iron 100mph or he's delofting the club and not using it as a 7 iron.

Hi guys, Sorry for a slow reply been very busy with work etc. I look like I could be buying a set of Nike VRs from direct golf as they have been very helpful I'm just waiting to hear back from the bloke who's dealing with me. I spoke to them bout swing speed and they sed it's bout 85-90 as my distances of hitting a ball sweetly along way etc. they did mention bout with my current clubs I might be delofting them a little bit as that could do with my consistency not being all there so hopefully might be sorted out soon lol. Cheers

You deducted that's what he needs off the info that was given? Impressive but AP2s with project X shafts aren't for everyone
