Recommendations for new irons?

Hi,

I'm considering a new set of irons and wanted some advice on where to start as I'm not really upt to date with whats out there.

I play to 17 but have a a big inside to out swing (trying to work on it!) which means I hit the ball with a closed club face, resulting in a low hook (I can't even hit a 3 or4 iron, ball has nowhere to go!). While I'm trying to fix it I would look to some irons that will help get the ball up a little more and reduce the amount of mishits

Any tips?

Sounds like you're looking for a Game Improvement Iron or Super Game Improvement iron.  These types of irons provide a much larger sweet spot area to give more forgivness off of mishits.  The irons also have a very wide soul which helps you sweep under the ball especially with longer irons to get the ball up.  What is your price range?

Yes - I'd get nowhere with the smaller blade types, so game improvers would be best - I have a very solid short game so if I can sort out my driver and mid irons I'd like to think I can down to 11/12 in a year or two........... budget, I don't mind too much, up to $900 would work for me.

Alright so you can pretty much get any clubs you desire, Go to your local golf shop and hit a few clubs.  Off the hop I'd recommend the Callaway Razr X tours they are a good club and actually pretty forgiving for players irons.  Nike Red Pro Cavity aren't too bad either.  Just do some research go to your local golf store talk to a pro and remember that just because you can spend 900 doesn't mean you need to.

Ping G series, Titleist AP1, and Taylormade Rockeballz would all be great choice. Demo as many irons as you can and find out what works best for you. I'd suggesting getting a game improvement iron. Someone with a big sole that will help you get the ball up in the air.

You might take a lesson to increase swing efficiency a little. Then, test out irons.

If you play to 17 HDCP with a low pull, you could easily play GI irons after you tweak your swing. These would give you perimeter weighting/cavity help without having super large heads. Don't forget that the shaft is half the club - get one that fits your swing.
