driving and distance control are going to make me crazy

my iron striking keeps getting better.  I'm using a 9 for 160 and under now.  My goddamn driver probable averages 230 with a random (1 in 8) 260-280 have had a few long balls in Vegas and PHX over 300, warm, downhill and tail wind.  I play 99% of my rounds in the PNW where its cold and soft 11.9 months out of the year.  No roll and soft as pudding with plugs in the center of the FW.

My irons keep going longer and longer which sounds great but it makes the actual game of golf much harder.  also, my wedges stay consistently short.  I play a 56 roughly 70 - 80 yards and my 52 to about 100, PW goes 125ish.  Feels so compressed on the yardages...

I feel like my 9 and 8 are just getting ridiculously long while most other clubs are pretty reasonable.  took my 7 to 178 maybe30 inches to right of the pin today.  I gambled due to my yardage increases.

As I type this I think I'm too steep....

Not sure what my question is, just frustrated with the game at the moment.  Flying greens on pure strikes is terrible.

EXACTLY where I'm at ... incorporating more wrist hinge & hitting down on the ball me overflighting greens regularly on pure shots  - sucks.     I think it comes down to trusting your distances ... I can't trust that I'm hitting a 9i 135 lately - when I'm used to hitting it 120.

i had the same irons and wedges as you last year.  the pw, 9, and 8 were ridiculous, imo.  big old blimps. long irons were automatic though.  lol went from burner+ to a really used set of mp-33's off cl. quite the leap but was the right move.  iron striking got a lot better really fast.   got the 59's for xmas from the fiance and absoloutley love them. just butter. I upgraded wedges to sm4 recently.  like them but was better out of the sand with the tw9, just stay our of the sand, right?

what a dumb game.  at least it's really expensive to play.

I'd suggest making a more controlled swing. You don't have to hit a 9 iron 160 yards that's actually pretty far. Dial it down. Figure out how to hit it more like 140. Should help you keep it consistent and you'll probably hit more greens using a controlled swing.

ok, so what are you hitting your 5 iron or 4 iron? I mean, with these distances (210 driver, 135 9i) you should be playing all irons. I mean, I hit my 3 iron 190. Driver, 205. It's just easier to score well with my irons, easier to swing my drivers & hybrids. My question to the more advanced player is: Does this kind of thing balance out as we gain skill, or is it possible the OP and myself are just irons oriented golfers?

You may have a better iron swing than driver swing. What's your ball flight like with you driver compared to your irons? What type of driver and irons are you playing? A lot of factors go in here.

Great advice.

I've taken steps to smooth out my swing and focus more on body turn, less on arms and hand action.  I've lost a club in distance, but picked up a ton of accuracy and control.  Currently hitting a 9 iron 150 rather than the 160 - 165.  Able to trust that distance more often now.

A. What shaft flex do you have in your driver? Possibly stiffer than your irons?

B. What is the face impact pattern on your driver? Put an impact label on the face, hit 10 shots, and see what patterns emerge. If you have impact all over the face, you might have a shaft that's a bit too long. Or, a launch monitor session with some ball flight data might be helpful if you have a club and not a swing problem.

C. Have you had a lesson recently? Possibly the things that make you a good iron striker are holding back better drives. A pro might be able to show you some tweaks to get more distance.

D. Maybe a mix of all three.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Either something is wrong with your driver swing or your driver.  Does your driver ball flight look right and just short or are you hitting low line drives, high pop  ups,...?  How is your contact?

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
