hey guys, i've never golfed before and there are pleanty of courses in the immediate area.

i found a set in the garage that had a worn/ripped  bag and has the following.

Callaway Steelhead big bertha 10

Adams Golf  (forget details but will get back to you) driver?

and a few Taylor made irons (on wikipedia it said iron sets usually contain 7 in 1 set, but i only have 4, is that an issue?)

are these clubs still okay? are they worth anything?

can i play with a mismatched set like this? i thought most people play with complete sets with matching bags and covers?

thanks guys!

hi mate. there are a few things you might look at. first have a look at the shafts and see whether they are the flex you want to swing. regripping the clubs will be a low.cost to use them. have a look at the irons and see whether they are spread across the range like a 3, 5, 7, 9 a sand wedge will round it out and get out and try them.

How do you get a 25 index without ever playing?

Get yourself a sand wedge and a putter and start swinging away!

1. Change your profile and put "??" for handicap so people here won't bust your chops.

2. Go to Dicks or somewhere that has used putters and a putting green. Hit few different styles and buy a used putter you like off the used club rack. Don't spend much because you are likely to change your mind about what you like after a few months. If you are unsure, get the shorter of the putters you like. Most people have putters that are too long for them and a lot are for sale used. I'm 6' tall and use a 33" putter. Get what you like.

3. Get a 54* or 56* sand wedge off the used club rack. Anything that fits your eye and budget. Again, less money is best at this point.

4. Go to the local public course. Take one ball, your putter, your PW, and your new sand wedge. Go to the practice green. Practice putting for a while. Hit some short putts in the hole. After a while, drop the ball near, but not on the green. Use you PW or you sand wedge and hit the ball to a hole. Putt that ball out (keep putting until it is in the hole). Do it again. After a while, make it a game: how many times in a row can you get from off the green to in the hole in four strokes? Three strokes? Do you do better with the PW or the sand wedge? All of this practice is free. Just stay out of others way and don't chunk up the grass. If you're not bothering anyone, you can stay there all day. If you use one ball, you will have less chance of being in anyone's way and you'll learn to get a ball in the hole -- somehow.

5. Watch the videos on this site of people's swings and read the threads. Get a feel for what you are supposed to do.

6. Get a bucket of balls at a local range and hit some balls. Take your time between swings and think more about making solid contact than hitting the ball hard. Try for an athletic feeling, smooth swing. If you have a buddy who plays, take him or her and have a good time. Aim at the targets on the range.

7. If you get bit by the golf bug, start taking lessons. Start as soon as you think this game is for you. Starting soon will help your pro teach you good habits before you create bad ones. Find a good pro and take lots of lessons.

temecula,

Since you don't seem to have friends who play golf, you might consider lessons earlier. Call local golf courses and see if they offer golf clinics. At a clinic, beginners get together one or two times a week and learn different parts of the game together. Clinics often are inexpensive, to attract new people to the game.

If you had a putter and a sand wedge, this would give you more than enough clubs to do a golf clinic or take lessons.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
