Cobra adjustable driver, how tight should the screw be?

Hey all, quick question.

I bought a used demo Cobra L5V driver, and am currently fighting a massive slice with it. It has an adjustable shaft (draw or straight), and I want to try it at draw, to see if it might help.

Thing is, since I bought it used on ebay, it didn't come with the torque wrench. Anyone know how much it should be torqued to? I have a torque wrench I can use, but want to know how much to tighten. And keep in mind I don't want to buy the cobra torque wrench, it would cost me almost as much as the drive cost me (33$).

Not sure about the cobra, but with my titleist 910, the wrench clicks when properly tightened (same wrench can be used on the taylormade drivers too)

So I would say that it may be a wise investment to buy the proper tool before you waste the money saved on buying a used club.

Yes, the wrench that Cobra provides with the club is a torque wrench and will click when the screw is tightened properly. Off-hand, there is no way to guess the amount of torque needed to tighten the screw to standards - so I would recommend either purchasing the wrench or taking the club to Golf Galaxy, Golf Smith, or a local pro-shop to see if they can lend you hand.

That's what I thought.

I'm not looking at guessing, but if I knew the torque figure that the cobra torque wrench is set at, I'd be able to use the tools I already own, without purchasing an additional specific torque wrench.

If you like the driver, might as well buy the wrench.  I have to tighten the heads on my Titleist 910D and 910F about once a month or so to keep them from getting loose.  When I first bought them, I didn't really ever check the set screw.  Was out on the course once about 2 months later and heard the head in my driver clicking.  When I got home I pulled out the wrench and got a full turn out of the set screw before it clicked.

They'll work themselves loose, so you'll need to use it periodically.

I've read that elsewhere on the net and I don't think that's right.  I think it should be 40 inch pounds, not foot pounds.  40 foot pounds would be about right for a 7/16" stainless steel bolt.  I have a torque wrench at work, if I remember I'll check my TaylorMade tool on it.

Definitely NOT 40 ft/lbs!!! A torque wrench isn't necessary either. I use moly paste on my threads and my hand torque wrench. Check it periodically

From an older press release about the R9:

TaylorMade announces introducing new R9 460 driver with FCT

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- In February, TaylorMade Golf introduced the R9™ driver, which today is the No. 1 driver model on the PGA Tour. ........   The R9 460 includes a white FCT wrench that delivers the 40 inch-pounds of torque necessary to adequately tighten the FCT bolt.

Looks like they confused inch-pounds with foot-pounds in the link you showed above.

Definitely tighter than I would torque it down. Let's put it that way. It's about 10-15 lbs tighter than I would set it before mine clicks.

    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.
