I'm looking for my next set of irons and want a GOOD fitting .....I've never had that done to my satisfaction.  Yes they've checked lie angle etc.....but never swapped shafts, etc. (you're a "stiff"...here's the S300)  IF I'm going to spend a grand on a set of irons, I want them RIGHT.  (In eye exam terms.....I want several...."better like this....or better like THIS??"  rounds to really dial in my setup).  Never once has anyone mentioned swing weight, etc.

I live in the Glens Falls area, but am willing to travel a few hours if there's somebody solid out there that others have experienced.  I've been to Exit 8 in Clifton Park and wasn't pleased with the rushed ' fitting '.  I drove 2 hours to Lebanon, NH to Golf and Ski Warehouse.....again, less than pleased with the detail of the fitting .  Were both better than a Dicks or Golf Galaxy....yes.  But not by much.

Please offer your recommendations of someone who knows his craft.

Leaning towards Mizuno or Titleist.

Thanks in advance,
Larry

Try Tony Curro, Tru-Fit Custom Clubfitters, (518) 469-7729.  He's in Latham, but does fittings at a few local courses.  He did a good job fitting my son.

Yes....I have a call into Kent at Tark's......waiting to hear back.  I've been enjoying his reviews there.

FYI.....His is a beautiful indoor facility there in Saratoga.  Nice place to keep loose for 4 months of #$%@ NY winter.  ;-)

Try Route Fore golf (518) 283-8836 in Troy/north Greenbush.  While I have never been there, I know plenty of people who have bought clubs and spoken positively about it.

On the topic of Northway 8 in CP. I bought my irons there a few years ago. I went in twice a week and hit every club in the place and finally settled on some 08 big berthas. Jim, the pro did the customer fitting and found I was standard across the board.

Fast forward to last week and I take a lesson from another pro at Northway 8. After hitting a few balls the Pro tells me " you should get customer fitted for some irons" I responded that I did!  The Pro asks where and by who.

I respond Jim @ Northway 8

Pro said "oh" and moved the lesson on quickly to change topic.

I love my irons but have always felt that they were a little to long. I hold the grip with 1/2 inch sticking out.

If you find a place let us know. I am sure many of us could use some help to undo Northway 8's shoddy fitting!

Thanks Tom.  Tony called right away (see previous post ).  Tried to catch him before I made a purchase ....but our schedules didn't work out.  He SEEMS like exactly what I was looking for and may still go to him to have him possibly tweak what I have if we can work out a good time (My schedule is the issue ... not his.  He's very willing to work out a time.)

I purchased a Pre-owned set of Mizuno JPX 800 Pros at the Albany Golf Galaxy despite their lousy customer service   Too good a price to pass on; knowing I can resell for the same IF I don't like them.  (Exit 8 was less than satisfying....but WORLDS AHEAD of GG.  Some of the workers at GG have been there as long as I've been going .... and still know next to nothing about their products.  Completely a self service operation....grrrr).

So far am VERY happy with the call.  I've played 3 rounds this week with them and each was better than the last.  Much as I would love to push myself towards a players club......my ball striking just doesn't support it.  Tough thing to admit to yourself  - but it's true.  A 7-iron struck a little harshly in round 2 confirmed my call.  It was........WACK....."well that's not going to get there ....%#$@.......oh S____?!?  Pin high on the right side of the green....how did that happen?"  Checked the club to see if maybe I hit it better than it felt.  Hell NO!  ball mark was mid-face, half on the scoring lines, half on the toe.  With my buttery-when-hit-well MP-52's that would have been a full club or more short.

I'll learn to live with margarine.

i was fitted at northway 8 for my ap1's 2 years ago now and i wasnt given a shaft option at the time. i play stiff shafts in my woods but they ordered my irons with r300 shafts. id like to sell the ap1's and get into a set of Titleist MB 712's...just not sure if my swing has changed to the point my "fitting" settings need to be adjusted as well. the ap1's are +1/2" and 2* upright. im just not sure if they still "fit" so to speak, and if i trust n-way 8 after reading the reviews here.

Not sure if Rochester is too far out for you, but there are several places out here.  Big Oak in East Rochester is highly ranked, and the fitting is free (obviously they hope you buy the clubs from them).  There is also a GolfTec in Pittsford (sub of Rochester), but you have to pay $100 or something like that for the fitting.  There is also a place in Penfield (sub of Rochester) that is pretty popular, but I can't recall the name off the top of my head.

Good luck man!

Thanks, but Rochester would be a HAUL.....about 5 hours.  I know because my daughter went to Nazereth and lived in Pittsford.....beautiful area!  We played Ravenwood (sp?) on one trip.....nice course.  However, with Oak Hill, Locust Hill, etc in your 'hood....Ravenwood may be considered a dogtrack .

there are fittings and then there are fittings.  I am sure Oak Hill proshop would be good, but I'd lean toward Pennfair because that's all they do.  Don't know how  serious you are.

Yes, obviously Oak Hill is one of the best courses in the world, but Ravenwood is still a nice course.  If you're ever back out this way and looking to play a round, I would suggest giving Mill Creek a go.  Very underrated links style course!

Good luck with the new clubs!
