i have no idea what the set up is like there, but last year i went to aac for the 93rd, and it was my first live pga event.  the third green was raised, so i posted up along the rope.  it just so happened that the first green, second tee box, third fairway and green, and entire 4th hole (par 3) were in complete view.  i posted up there to watch the final 10 pairings or so go through.  i got to the course real early, and basically walked the entire thing watching various pairings and notables who were out of contention.  i posted at the 16the green bleachers for the last couple of hours to watch the conclusion before heading to the 18th for the finale.  i was only there for the final round, so i felt i had to cram as much in as possible.

i know the pga had limited spectator tickets available for this year, so i'm not sure how that may affect walking with/following groups.  the pga radio ear bud they gave out last year helped a lot to follow the scoring pace.  if the trend continues for this major, the winner is going to come from behind on sunday, so maybe head out early (with the groups around 4-5 shots back). then post up at one of the later holes and try and follow the leaders in.

I went to my first tournament this year at Congressional.  It was 100* out so we wanted to find a spot to sit and camp out.  I think the best spot we found was a par 4 with a bit of a dog leg.  If you sit on the outside (wide side?) of the bend and you've got a great view of the tee shots coming in and the approach shots on the green.  Try to pick a spot where the tee shots will land so you're up close on the second shot.  Its crazy how close you get to these guys.  It was so much cooler than I expected.

Tiger was in the last group so we would go about 4 holes ahead of him and watch until his group finished the hole, then skip ahead four holes or so.  If you follow Tiger its hard to get close.  This way we were able to grab the prime spot, hang out, and watch all the leaders come though.

I found standing near the green to be dreadful.  Standing in absolute silence watching Jeff Overton read a put 4 times and fix every real and imagined imperfection on the green was painful.

And if you're there on Sunday, be sure to move up to 18 early.

    • I apologize on behalf of… idiot men. Sorry about that. Next time, tell the guy to shut up. 😛  Day 553, May 8, 2024 18 holes from the whites with @rwolfe. Windy AF today, but hit some good shots. Slid back a little from where I was the previous two days, but… I can get it back. Made a pretty nifty birdie on 12 from some pretty odd places. 😄
    • The angles look fine. Get as much light as you can on the area — you want the highest shutter speed you can get. Less blur.
    • Snap @ Tour Spoon! Birdied 11 yesterday. Hit a poor iron ,stopped on edge of bunker , pitch with my lob wedge landed about 6’ away and went in. Only 12 & 14 to go, long par5’s into the prevailing wind. Might be waiting a while although I did have about 15’ on 12 after the birdie on 11, didn’t miss by much.
    • Tested the Maxfli TourS yesterday. Compared to my former ball, the Titleist AVX, I got an extra 10 yards off the driver and half a club (5-7 yards) off the irons. The combined extra yardage from the driver and fairway wood meant that on par-5s where I usually hit an 8-iron third shot, I hit a PW. It's just a smidgen softer than the AVX and seems to spin well. Some of the reviews indicated a low ball flight, but I did not notice it. I also did not observe any problems with the paint quality, which was an issue with previous Maxfli models up to and including the U series.  My previous round I tested the Bridgestone E6, a two-piece ball with a different cover. It was OK; the same distance and feel as the AVX but with less spin.
    • Sad tale.  Both the A's and Raiders.  IMO, cities shouldn't be building stadiums for MLB/NFL teams.  But that's the world we live in.   DAY 3:  30-min range session with irons and wedges.  Working on follow thru -- no hooks! 🙂
