I am a 12 handicapper. Been using Taylormade R9 Super tri Regular Shaft. The current shaft on my driver is

Fujikura Motore 60

  • The Fujikura Motore 60 is the stock shaft option for the R9 SuperTri driver. This shaft weighs 59 grams and has a butt (grip end) diameter of .600 inches. This butt diameter will dictate that grips with a .600 inch diameter be used to ensure proper grip sizing. The Motore 60 also has has a strong torque rating of 3.5 for M and R flex and 3.4 for S and X flex. Shaft torque is a rating that measures the amount of lateral shaft twisting at the clubhead during the golf swing

I have been using this driver for the past 2 years and my driver setting is on full draw. I am averaging around 250-260 yards currently and dont really have problem with my driving accuracy. I am upgrading to Titleist 913D2 driver. The reason for my upgrade is to slightly get a better / newer driver to increase my distance by 5-10 yards minimum.

I did my custom fitting with callaway a few months back. The numbers I have are for my 6 iron. Club head speed: 76.4, Ball speed 111.3. As a thumb of rule I am guessing my club head speed with the driver would be around 85-90mph and ball speed would be around 135mph.

I wanted help in deciding which shaft I should get with my new driver.

Thanks,

First, I'd say wait for the Titleist Fit Carts and Get a fitting. I've heard the 913 D2 spins less than the 910 - so I'd want a fitting. You may be between flexes in the i'lima and Bassara - would have to try them.

But I would consider, given your estimated SS and a normal swing, and normal tempo - a 913 D2

Stock Shaft  -  Diamana S 62 with a high loft head - people are afraid to get a 12 degree head - but we're talking a mid launch, mid spin shaft and the 12 degree head that you can lower loft by .75 and increase it by 1.5. If you don't want to go that way, a 10.5 head that you could increase to 12. Since the 913 D2 spins less, I'd be more tempted to try the 12 deg head with this shaft. But heck, a 10.5 can go to 12. I'd look at R flex, too.

A Titleist i'lima 61 - a higher launch shaft used last year and still available in the Titleist Download for Shafts - pair this with a 10.5 head where you could increase the loft.

Stock Shaft -  Titleist Bassara W 55 (50?) - Hey, Ben Crane won a tour event with this exact shaft, so why not? It will get your launch and spin up. The only question is flex - if you're approaching 90 mph, I'd be tempted to try the S flex. Pair it with a 10.5 913 head and experiment with loft. (I use this shaft in the Titleist 910 fairways and a hybrid - ball gets up there, and shaft feels good)

I'd look at those 3 shafts in the 913 - no upcharge on them.

Issue is where I live we dont have custom fitting.

Today I tried the Titleist 910D2 Driver with F3 Motore Shaft (Stiff)... It was originally a 9.5 loft, but I changed the set to A3, which makes it 11 and full draw.

i didnt like the feel of it and my shots were still fading....

thats made me double minded now...

I would try a different shaft as outlined in my initial post. The Motore isn't optimized for you and/or the flex is too strong. If you go to a more optimal shaft and flex, you will swing with less effort and your flight will improve. In the Bassara, you may like a S flex, but in the others, more likely a R flex.

To add, I looked at the Titleist Shaft Comparison, the Motore F3 60 is at the low end of its mid spin-mid launch section. The others I suggested seem more suited to you, based on your comments, and assuming you have a smooth transition to impact. The Diamana S 62 may work in a higher loft and R flex, but I'm thinking the i'lima 61 in R, or the Bassara W 50 in S flex are stock shafts to demo.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
