Okay. So I returned the Ping i20 driver, 3 and 5 wood. In exchange I purchased a Taylormade R1. I tested R and S flex in the simulator. Hit 70 balls and consistently swinging 88 - 93 MPH and maybe 10 times clocked 94 - 96 MPH with both shafts. Distance in air was about 188 - 195. Roll out netting 205 -210, again with both shafts. A few duds netted 180 either mishiits with the stiff or flaming slices with the regular. Cracked one with stiff that was 215 / 225 total. I have played a 905R with made for Titleist fujikura speeder stiff for 6 years Could pop it out there 250 on average with a real ball and never felt the stiff (albeit a made for Titleist stiff) was too much. The Pro said I should go with the R flex. That at 54 my swing isn't going to get any faster and being on the low end of stiff and mid to high end of regular it was the better choice. Added that after 15 holes or on chilly days I'd get more out of the regular and be over swinging to get the stiff to work. Bought the R flex and don't plan to play for a week or so. Would appreciate input on whether the R is the right choice based on my swing speed or I should have gone with the S flex. Want to be certian I have made the correct choice. I have always been willing to give up a little distance to have a tighter dispersion. Always easier hitting a green from at 170 from the fairway than from the rough at 155. Both flexes felt good. Do like the crispness of a stiff, but I was ready to go either way based on consistent speeds and distances. I wish I'd taken my own balls to get a real feel and can still do that if I still have question marks about the R slex. Its not like I boast or brag about flex. Its just a big change and want it to be the right one. Perhaps the time is right. Its more about always being a stiff and worrying regular may cost accuracy. As for irons, play Titleist ZB cavity/muscle mix irons with project x 5.3 shafts. 7 iron distance is 150. Comments and advice from R1 players or those with input on flex in general appreciated.

I would recommend a Regular Shaft. Taylormade says that you should pick regular in your driver if clubhead speed is 80-95, ball speed 115-135 and average distance 190-230.

I know every guy likes to hit (X-)Stiff shafts but this may lead to over swinging and bad ball contacts…

The few times your clubhead speed is (slightly) above 95 mph won’t harm your accuracy or your game.

Have him frequency the shafts to give you a true reading. I had a stiff flex taylormade irons that were rated regular flex by the frequency match machine. Never trust the writing on the shaft.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I had an R1. Got rid of it.My swing speed was 94 to 97mph, had the stiff shaft. It felt like a rubber band.

I do have a couple questions....Were you hitting them more left or right and with which shaft? In your Ping's what shaft did you have?

Why does TM have to come out with something different every six months? Now they have the SLDR that I will never try.

The technology can not possibly be changing that much or we would be hitting 600 yard drives by now.

I found a brand new still in the wrapper Ping K15 with a 149D stiff shaft and that so called technology is 4+ years old now and I can not find a driver that will out do it on the market today.

When it comes to clubs (any of them) find a club head that looks good to you and go with that. Then move on to finding the shaft that is best for you. It might be a $50 shaft or it may be a $300 shaft, either way find the right one for YOU. Then find a grip you really like and works best for your size hand and how you like for it to feel. And last but not least (and I'm getting off the subject here) find a golf ball, even if it's a cheap one and stay with that from now on. If you do these things and stop trying to impress your buddies (and I'm not saying you are, but some do) I promise you will play better golf.

One more thing, these shafts that come in these"stock" driver's are "made for" shafts. You may find that a stock shaft is to your liking, mine was in the case of my K15, but don't let all this shaft stuff go to your head when looking for any club. It don't matter what it is, just make sure the club head looks good to you at address and it feels good when you make contact.

Bragging about a 200 yard 7 iron is not golf.
