Is it as simple as choking up or do I need to do something more?
I would start by choking down on the club.
You can go and get the shaft cut, but I found that it does make the club feel different (lighter). The swing weight will change. It shouldn't really change the performance of the shaft, just changes how the club feels. For you, you might be taking as much as an inch off the shaft, that is pretty substantial in terms of swing weight change.
