One of my clients played in a scramble over Labor Day that had a cool format. Each team got to pick what tees they would hit from as a team. They had to play 6 holes from the red, 6 white and 6 blue. He said it was a lot of fun and brought a lot of strategy into it. Do you play a long par 5 from the reds and hope to shorten it up to the length of a 4? Do you play a short par 3 further back in hopes that you can still get it close? I could see using this format with my regular Sunday group as well.

In most of the scrambles I've played in it seems Par 3's are a thorn in the side. Not all Par 3's, but most of the pars come on Par 3's. We might shoot 16 - 18 under, but par two Par 3's. So I guess I'm saying I would look at shortening the Par 3's & maybe two Par 5's depending on the layout of the course.

No question the longer Par 3's would be almost no brainers. I guess it also would depend on the course layout and the skills of your group. If you have a long bomber that can keep it in play, maybe you try to shorten a par 4 and go for an eagle there. It just makes it a lot more interesting.

Personally i would play that format this way:
Shorter par 4's from the blue's
Par 5's and longer Par 4's from the red's
Par 3's and anything left over from the whites.

Interesting idea. I have a couple friends that organize scramble tournaments every year and they are always looking for new ideas that will make the tourneys more fun. I'll have to pass this along to them.

Personally i would play that format this way:

I agree w/this assessment as well

, most Par3's (at least the majority of the courses I play anyways) are not long from the whites....

I've played that scramble and it's alot of fun. Advantage goes to the people who have played the course and knows which hole/s would be trouble from the back tees. The picture of a slight dogleg over a pond on the card turns out you can't hit the drive over the pond from the front tee just makes you waste using the forward tee on a hole you could have just layed up on from the back tee. Course knowledge is very useful in that scramble format.
