Hi,

I had a trackman session yesterday with my pro, and the major problem was face angle. It varied between closed and open, everything from +5 to -5 degrees. (Swing path pretty consistent around 0 degrees :-))
The pro was pretty sure that this indicated that I was too "handsy", and when I tried my wrists to be more passive it did help.

Now, my question is: how can I have passive wrists but still get a good lag? (I have always had a weak lag, I'm a swinger not a hitter.)
I feel like I need to be active with my hands to be able to trap the ball and get a good attack angle (talking about irons now), but that is maybe a misunderstanding?

Thanks for any input!

Maybe slightly off point, but I’d pick a shape and stick with it. Swinging at 0 I don’t think is ideal because if you have any curve at all, you’re not hitting target. It’s best to start the ball out to one side and curve it back to the target line, never crossing the center line. Working the ball predominantly one stock way will lead to much more consistency and you’ll “take one side of the course” out much better than trying to zero everything out.

See this article:

Redefining “Optimal” TrackMan Numbers for Improved On-Course Performance Jack Nicklaus once...

When I practice, I try really hard to always start the ball to the right about 7* and draw it back to target, but never cross the center line. I want a push draw with every club but NEVER a hook. I’ll take a little push any day. As long as it has draw spin on it, I’m fine. For approach shots I typically aim at the middle of the green or left side. Driver I always aim down the left. I never want to see a shot miss left. Ever.

Again not not sure if this is directly on point, but I would try to get a consistent face to path, either fade or draw, and don’t worry about zeroing out. It can actually hurt your game as you can miss both ways.

@ncates00, there’s nothing about a path of 0 that means he can’t pick a shape and stick with it.

I’ll have more for the OP after errands. Short version: “lag” is a result of good sequencing.

@ncates00 Thanks for your reply, but the swing path wasn't my problem. Question was about very variable face angle, and what happens to lag if I concentrate on passive wrists.

Ok cool. I don’t know the technical side of how to do it but since the face largely determines start line, I would “feel” the ball start where I want it and it’ll work away from that path.

I see your point; I just like to have the ball work toward 0 instead of my path be at 0.

It's all relative. Lee Trevino had a path that was outward relative to his body, but left of his target line.

Aim right and have a path of 0 and a face of -2 and play a pull-draw. Or aim left and play a push-fade. There's nothing wrong with a path of zero if you understand it.
