Michelle Wie qualifies for U.S. Open

ROCKVILLE, MD (AP) — Despite playing 36 holes on a humid day with temperatures nearly reaching triple digits, Michelle Wie was still able to flash a big smile as she sat down with the media.

Qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open will do that.

Playing on two different courses, Wie carded rounds of 70 and 67 and her 137 total was the second best score on the day and more than enough to qualify her for the 2008 Open, to be played later this month at the Interlachen Country Club in Edina, Minn.

Hope she does well.

SubPar

There is no doubt she has always had the ability. I hope she strings together some solid finishes to get her confidence back. If she is healthy and mentally right she will be right back where she was in 2006. Contending on Sunday in Majors.

I'm rooting for her. I think she was sent on the wrong path by her elders and wasnt properly prepared for what she was getting into. Hopefully she can mature and turn it around.

I have always been a fan and wish her well.

Ditto all the positive sentiments recently expressed.

Despite the fact that her parents are still ruling her every move, they have either seemed to have wisened up a bit OR she's making some decisions for herself.

I think we may have a new record. That was more than 10 posts without someone saying anything bad about her or about how she has never done anything on a golf course to warrant the attention she gets.

It will be interesting to see if her good play continues and if so, will it change her plans to play part time while completing her degree.

What I'm afraid of is that she'll hog all the TV attention, the cameras following her every move when she's eight shots out of the lead. Meanwhile: Ochoa, Pressel, Tseng and Creamer are within a shot of each other at the top and we never get to see them.

That happens with Tiger, too, but since he's only out of contention once or twice a year it's not so annoying.

They've never really given her that treatment, no. And two years ago, Wie had the highest combined finish of anyone - she was almost always in contention.

They didn't show her much last year, particularly since she wasn't around on the weekends.

The other thing to point out is that not everyone that watches golf, even the LPGA, is a die hard fan. Many of them don't know who Pressel and Creamer are, but they do know who Michelle Wie is and they want to see her play. TV is a business. The goal is to get as many people to tune in as possible. To do that they occasionally need to do a little side show stuff. In 2006 the coverage was warranted. She was in contention in 3 majors, with a real chance to win on the back 9 on Sunday. Last year they did not show her much because, as you said, she was gone on Friday. I'm sure NBC is hoping to be able to show her on Sunday, late in the day, with a chance to win.

I don't know what the TV ratings were like in 2006 vs. 2007, but I would bet they were higher in the events that she was contending in.

The first major for each of the top tours this year is going to be fantastic. I'd like to get out to the desert too. I wonder if I'll find the time.

She's 6'0 tall. Of course she's going to have legs. Other than that, she doesn't do anything for me, but, that's just me.

I made it up to the womens U.S. Open when they were up here in Chaska, Minnesota in 2008. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The "sites" you see can be pretty nice.
