I have been using Tommy Armour Silver Scot cavity back Irons for the last 6 months. My handicap has been falling but mainly due to chipping and putting. These clubs are really nice when I hit the sweet spot but have only a small cavity and are pretty unforgiving if I miss just a little. I like them but feel I could still be getting a bit more from my clubs untill I start being a bit more consistent. Have been eyeing up some taylor made rac os2's and lt2 (good pricing, particulary on the os2's) lately and just wondering what they are like? I like a little bit of ofset but dont like thick top lines like big berthas. I really just want a more forgiving cavity back club that doesnt feel to harsh. Really like the TA's forged feel but prepared to go cast if I can get some more forgiveness! I have a pretty quik swing (stiff shafts) and hit the ball quite high, Bit worried I would just ballon it with the os2's...

Any thoughts?

Why not buy the r7 or r7TP irons. The os2 and lt2 irons are a few years old now and the technology is probably a bit out of date.

Thats what makes them affordable! Cant justify $1000 on an iron set right now! Would be nice though. 2005 technology is more than enough for me I'm sure. Have you used any of those clubs?

I bought Taylor Made LT 3-PW back in 2003. It is a great iron. Iron technology doesnt move as fast as driver tech so I wouldnt worry about buying an older set. I still have mine and will not sell them (as I use the 3 iron in my surrent set lol). They have a great look and feel to them.

How much is your budget then? You could try Callaway X-18 or X-18 tour. I believe they're about $400-500 new. As well as Mizuno MP-60 for around $500 on eBay.

Think about buying used clubs if money is a problem. Demo as many different iron sets as possible.

Someone must know about these irons...

There is a very good review of the Lt2 iron on this website, you can find it here:

http://thesandtrap.com/equipment/clu...t_irons_review IMO the Lt2 is one of the very best irons Taylormade has ever made if not THE best; and it's heads and shoulders above the R7TP. The R7TP has a lighter clubhead and less forgiveness, while at the same time it offers no more workability than the Lt2 which has a heavier, more solid feel. The look from address is almost indentical, while the overall look goes to the Lt2. The black and gold crap on the back of the R7TP's is uneccesary and downright ugly in comparison to the simple look of the Lt2. The only reason the Lt2's are not in the bag is because I'm enjoying the Mizuno forged feel. But I will never sell the Lt2's, every time I sit them behind the ball, they just look perfect.

I use T.M. rac os2s, and honestly I absolutely love them. They are my second set of irons, and I was instantly a better ball striker. They are also an excellent value. You can get them for 330.00 brand new online... (am i allowed to name websites on this forum? I'm new, i don't know the rules yet...)

I have them with stiff flex steel shafts, as I am also a pretty fast swinger. My 9 iron carry is 150 yards, 4 iron is 210. You are correct that these irons hit a high ball, they do so for me even though I am a sweeper and don't take much of a divot even with short irons. Any short to mid iron is almost certain to stop for me on all but the fastest greens due to the high trajectory. Pitching wedges spin back a couple feet quite often. But honestly, I don't think you're going to have issues with ballooning shots or a loss of distance with these irons, unless you are teeing the ball way too high, or know something i don't.

I think these are well worth looking into. They may be a few years older, but they are really great irons. I have not met anyone yet who tried them and did not like them (my best golfing buddy also uses them, and they are the rental clubs at my local course).

As far as personal preference on offset and set up goes, i can't help you there, but i will say that confidence at address is an issue for me as well and I like they way these set up and look.

LOL! I second that!

Compare it to TM TP Forged 2008 except the red and yellow TP paint-fill of course.
I'm enjoying the Mizuno forged feel...

rac OS2's 9-iron at 41deg and it is 2 degrees stronger than most standard irons. For instance, my MP-60's 9-iron is at 43deg. That's why TaylorMade claims that their irons (including CGB Max, r7 XD, etc) are longer.

Let me guess, your driver swing speed is around 105-110mph?

Yes this is true. My swing speed is around 105 with the driver. In fact you are bringing up one of the only issues i have with this set: I believe the pitching wedge is 45*, and I carry that 135-140, which gives me issues because the "Gap" my 52* gap wedge is supposed to be covering is too big. My 52* cleveland gap wedge flies about 105 which leaves another pretty large "gap". I'm going to have to go to a 50* wedge sometime in the future.

I didn't mean to say that these clubs are extra long or anything, i just wanted to try to represent the performance these clubs give me because i believe i have a simmilar swing speed to the person asking about these irons. But you bring up a good point for sure.

    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
    • When someone is trying to validate their choice, statements concluding with "right" are often the MO.  Too bad he thinks he has to keep defending his decision, just do like guys like DJ and HVIII - take the money, play the tourneys and keep quiet.
    • I liked Rory talking about keeping it shallow. I think a lot of people imagine steep as really steep. Trackman has a PW attack angle at 5 degrees. Pitch shots you probably want less than 5-degrees.  Here is 5 degrees, the dashed line. It isn't much at all.  People probably need to feel like the club is stupidly shallow if they hit it really steep.  Some good tidbits of information though.
    • Hey, many thanks in identifying those.
