I voted for Scotland mainly as it's my home country and I know there are tons of magnificent courses all across the country.

I'm from the middle region of Scotland and in a radius of 1hr's drive we have Carnoustie, St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Downfield, Gleneagles and that new thing Trump, Plus many more.
There is a great mixture of parkland, links and open courses and winds to test even the steadiest golfer's nerves.

Ireland is a great country and has some fantastic courses too. If you have enough money and making the trip across, why not try and do both countries? You can pick up cheap flights from Scotland or Ireland, and many airlines fly all over both places.

If you do decide to come, I'm sure you'll be treated to a warm Celtic holiday no matter which country you choose :)

Have had chance to visit both 5 times. First trip best done to SW Ireland. Stay in Killarney and hit Tralee, Ballybunion, Waterville, Old Head, Killarney and Lahinch day of arrival. Possibly Doonbeg day prior departure or day 2. Ireland slightly cheaper, more fun and more user friendly. Courses are very nice. Scotland has the more name recognition/ British Open tracks and is great. But if you want to play some of the courses require 16 months prior planning. If this is once in lifetime go to Scotland. If first of several go to Ireland. And as the original poster is from WI go to American Club and tool around Straits and Irish....They are just as nice as 98% across the pond and much cheaper considering everything. Enjoy. Father son trip sounds perfect.

as the economy is bad, we decided to go to hawaii instead. all of the flights and hotels on points as my dad travels for work.

I voted 'other' - take them both in on the same trip! Some absolutely great courses in both places.

I have never been to either but have read that the Irish courses are much nicer.

For the course itself, I'm not at all bothered having played it several times. For the history, it's worth it. If you make 4 on the Road Hole that does add a little to the day as well.

to offer you a bit more help - how much are you planning to spend on the golf?

I thought Lomond was by invite of a member only? It's shouldn't be so exclusive when it's built on that fabulous bit of country.

Home Course: Wollaton Park GC, Nottingham, U.K.

    • Musgrove Mill hole #15 was converted to a par 3 after Hurricane Helene. Today, I had 145 from the tee which is a perfect 9-iron for me. I aimed just right of the hole and pulled it a few feet. Clanked off the stick down into the hole and ricocheted out of the hole 13’ away. Drained the putt for a birdie after repairing the hole which was damaged . Not sure if it would have counted as a HIO, but I was pretty excited!
    • Day 55 - 2024-11-24 Did five levels of Operation 36 on GSPro (different courses). 🙂 Was -4 from 200 yards (32) intentionally laying up on each hole (i.e. not hitting a 5I or something). Shot… 22, 24, 26 from 25, 50, and 100 yards. I forget my 150-yard score, but obviously it was < 36. Putting was odd… (and I did it with the wedge or a 7I or whatever was in my hand).
