Okay I just recently rehauled my golf set getting new irons driver and a 3 hybrid. The only thing I didn't replace was the putter. I even got a new ping tour wedge 52/56 degrees. Well, I have spent a pretty penny and now I find myself short a 3 wood/4 wood. Is there that much difference in a 3/4 wood and a 3 hybrid? Or do you feel investing in a 3/4 wood is important for scoring?

I hit the hybrid around 195-205. The hybrid is 21 degrees btw.

Thanks for any feedback

Cheers

Your woods and hybrids

aren't scoring clubs. They're a backup for a driver, a club to play for position off the tee, something to hit far out of the rough with, and replacements for your long irons. They might set you up for a wedge or chip into a par-5, depending on your distances. I sometimes debate taking my 5-wood out of the bag because I'm not 100% sure of its distance and I'm not sure if it's much farther than my 3-Hybrid. I need to do my homework on this to be certain. The clubs that really determine your score are your primary tee-shot club (usually driver), your wedges, and your putter. The rest are utilities to set up the use of those. If you find yourself consistently 10-20 yards farther from the green than your longest non-driver club can take you, consider a 2H or 3/4/5W at that point.

The three wood is definitely a good option instead of driver on short par fours or tight driving holes. It's also a great option on those long par fives, hitting it from the fairway. The 3h is a different animal. Can be used on long par 3s. A great recover club when you've hit a bad one off the tee. Frankly, I could go on and on about it's many uses. I hit my 3w anywhere from 225 to 275. The 3h I hit 200 to 230. Definitely want to carry both.

I'm considering dropping my 3h and getting different lofted wedges. Furyk had an article where he explained why he dropped his 4 iron in favor of another wedge. I remember it saying he carries a 50, 55, and 60. He said strengthened the loft of his 5 iron slightly to better fill the gap between 3 and 5, because he wanted another wedge to add more versatility around the greens.

driver: G10 draw 9 degrees
hybrids DWS 16 and 20 degrees
irons: x-16 3-pw
wedges: 588 RTG 51, 56 & 60
putter: Heavy Putter B3-Mball: hx tour (I'll switch after I lose these)
