Hey Guys,

been a silent follower for the most part for the last couple of years. Really struggled with my game for the last few years. When I first started learning, I had an instructor that made me think I was supposed to sway and I developed all kinds of bad habits. This entire year I’ve tried to get myself into a centered pivot and I’ve worked on swinging in-to-out.

I’ve developed the idea that the more I concentrate on my “swing” and my path that I’ve getting more inconsistencies. More specifically, as I would take the club back my focus would be on my arms and eventually, I’d sway back and up and because my focus was on my arms I couldn’t really control this movement. I figure the club is not moving how I want it to because my body is not moving properly. As a result I’ve tried to focus on getting my body to move better.

For example, in an effort to remain more centered in the backswing, I’m starting my backswing by turning my hips and letting my shoulders and arms follow and fall into play. I’m trying not to focus on my arms or hands. I feel like by focusing more on something other than my arms, hands, and club that I’m creating better tempo and not over swinging. By starting with my hips I’m very much remaining centered in my backswing and have created more consistency. When I watch on video, you cannot visibly see the difference in the start between my hips and my shoulders but I can feel it for sure.

I’m curious as to the thoughts of those that know way more than I and if I’m finally headed in the right direction.

Yeah..gotta go with @dennyjones. Hell, what you’re working on may not even be a priority piece for you. Post a video and state what you feel during the different parts of your swing.

I would also suggest a video.

But, what has helped me with sway, is to go out in the yard on a sunny day and drop a ball. Then set up such that the sun casts the shadow of my head onto the ball. As I take a slow practice swing (without hitting the ball) I make sure that the ball stays within the shadow of my head. My head is not perfectly still but I do ensure that the ball does not go outside of the shadow of my had as I rotate back, down and through.

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
