Golf statistics software: What do you want?

I'm currently developing a web-based golf statistics software that, so far, tracks score, putts, GIR, putting average, ups&downs; (a.k.a. scrambling), and fairway hits (a.k.a. driving accuracy). What else would be useful? Sand saves? Driving distance is virtually impossible to measure accurately for amateurs, right?! BTW, how do they measure it for the pros anyway? Thanks in advance.

I believe there are 1 or 2 holes designated at each tournament that they measure distance on. They don't factor in all the driving holes.

In the bag:

Callaway Big Bertha 454 9* w/ Aldila NV 65-S shaft
Callaway Big Bertha 3-Wood
Titleist DCI 981 irons Cleveland 588 60* and 64* wedgesOdyssey White Hot #5 center shafted putterBridgestone B330/Callaway HX Tour balls

Make sure when you calculate putts average it presents the "putts per GIR" as supposed to simply total putts / # of holes played.
I also like to track the club off the tee and Left/Right misses, but it could be a bit much for some...

Yes, I'm tracking putts/GIR and tracking of left/right misses is on my list already

May I ask what software you are currently using, if any at all? T.

I'm using software that a friend and I are developing.

I've the SkyGps - it's the only thing I use, other than that only GIR, FWY and putts per hand

Is SkyGPS worth the money?

Wouldn't using a GPS during a posted round be against the rules? cy

Straight from the Q&A; section of USGA website:

Rule 14-3 Rangefinders and other Electronic Distance Measuring Devices Q. Is it legal under the Rules of Golf to use a Rangefinder or other EDM device? A. The use of a laser rangefinder is a breach of Rule 14-3, which states that during a stipulated round, the player shall not use any artificial device or unusual equipment for the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions which might affect his play. (Rule 14-3) However, please note that the guidelines of the USGA Handicap System require that scores made when using such a device must be posted for handicap computation purposes.

On a course you never played before - it's priceless. Problem is that there are limited number of courses with GPS maps available, I hope it will really pick up soon. I don't have the new SkyCaddie - I'm still using the "old" PDA attachment - so I don't know all the features they offer now, I'd think it's even better...

I'm using it with satisfaction during every golf trip, so for me the answer is "yes, it is". Of course a loving wife who bought me that thing for my birthday makes this answer much, much easier

How useful is it with no GPS map? Unfortunately there are no courses with GPS maps in Switzerland. On their web site it says that you can enter course data yourself even though I guess that's quite limited, right?!

it's quite a work, but you can create your own maps. You have to walk hole after hole and save coordinates to all the critical points - bunkers, carries, green edges, etc. There is a huge selection of "home made" maps avaiable on skygolfgps.com beside the "professional" ones.

W/o a map - no GPS advantage at all. All you can do is scoring and stats...

Thanks a lot for all the information. Looks quite interesting and I'll give it some thought.

Do you know, by any chance, in what format the information is read from the PDA? Is it plain text? In that case I might be able to import the stats into my application...

No idea, but I'd guess is some propriatory format - dBase like. I'll see if I've any stats saved and if they're text based - if so I'll let you know.

In other news, if you want a SkyCaddie for $250, I've got one. I use the Bushnell now, mostly. $250 includes shipping.

Well, it looks like a nice toy but there are no course data for Switzerland, so I probably cannot make full use of it over here. I'll give it some thought anyway and let you know.

    • Day 22 (12 Feb 25) - Short session with 7i into the net in the backyard.  Was not the best session - struggled in getting the face squared up.  Took a few steps back and did a reset.  Better contact second time around.
    • Nope, and a bit too expensive for what I usually spend on clothing. Not sure if these pants are the kind where they are like business casual but also can be worn while doing athletic stuff (like working out).  I do own a pair of pants from VRST, and like them a lot. They got a business casual look, but very stretchy. I forgot my gym shorts to volleyball on Monday. I had these pants on and had no issues. You can literally go from work to the gym. .
    • 100%.  Currently, it takes me several shots of various progressions to make my brain even trust that it will work.  It is so opposite from the feelings I have had for years.  And forget about adding any speed at the moment. That is just a recipe to fall back on the old habit
    • I haven't either. But there doesn't seem to be any reason why at least the pants would create any issues.
