Putter grip build up

I have another question for you professional clubmakers out there. I prefer a very large putter grip and recently purchased two of the old style tiger shark jumbos. I installed the grip but blew it off b/c I wanted it to be a tad bigger. How many build up wraps can I put on and still be able to get the grip on the shaft? Any drawbacks to adding two many wraps? Any tricks to installing a grip over a large number of wraps?

A lot of solvent will help get a grip on after applying a lot of wraps.
