Went to the range after work today, hit 50 on the range and 50 on the chipping green. Irons ok, driving piss poor - everything going right and a super high sky or 2 entering the equation.

Spoke to the pro about re-shafting to reg flex and he started asking about carry with the driver (previously 240+ with the R7, now only 210 with the 905R), how far the 6 iron goes (160) etc. I mentioned the experience with my old R7 and he suggested the shafts between the clubs were very similar. Took me back to the range to hit a few balls and he's right - problem is me rather than club/shaft!

After giving me some pointers (my alignment was way off and I am striking the ball to high on the club face) hitting much better. Never really noticed that I am hitting off the crown until tonight (I now have my 1st sky mark on the crown of the club - doh!)

He put some of the titleist fitting tape on the face and crystal clear - smack right out of the middle of the face, but off the top of the club. Will be trying to tee lower to see if that helps, and a lesson is on the way too.

Certainly good to see a pro suggest a change in swing rather than take the money for a replacement shaft!

Happy days - what I have works (or certainly will with a bit of practice...)

Its nice to hear a good story like that instead of the pro trying to get you to fork out $$ for equipment. I only have one guy who I know like that but I used to work for him for 10 years so we know each other well. Most everyone else who has tried to give advice was to buy something.

Thats a cool story.

As can be seen in the attached, catching the ball way to high on the face - and I don't tee it overly high - crown is in the middle of the ball. Seems I don't come up on the ball when striking it, and so I will lower the tee so middle of ball is slightly above the middle of the face of the club.

Will also be working on my alignment to make sure I am actually pointing where I want the ball to go - Essentially need to aim a lot more left than I currently do!

Note the lovely print from a hook that I hit - nice. Then 2 out of the top/middle of the face.

Anyone know where I can pick up the face tape so I can use it in my practice to see how I am doing?

It was strange that the pro commented on a swing speed in the region of 85-95 mph that was suitable for a stiff shaft, but he's right - when aiming correct it works. Based on that, I thought I was reg, which is why I was about to shell out on a new shaft. Lucky escape!!

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. Than i got myself a new putter Odyssey S2S jailbird yes i joined the centershaft family
    • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
