From what I can tell from the limited info online, it appears to be a mesh ball and may date as early as the late 1910’s-1930’s.

Nice. Will it clean up much, or is that stuff kinda "baked in"?

That's as clean as you're going to get it. In fact that's actually VERY clean. Nice find!!
