Hey guys, i'm new to the forum. Anyway, for my birthday, i asked my dad for my own set of golf clubs (i've been using his for a long time now). The ones that i'm using now are the Bang Golf Bang-O-Matic Center Cut custom fitted for my dad. I've done a little research and i've decided that i want the R7 Draw Combo with 3Hybrid and 4Hybrid and get them custom fitted. I've talked to my dad about it and he tells me that i should get the same clubs as him, custom fitted to myself, and that hybrids are only for cheaters. Anyway, i would just like you guys to input your opinions. Thanks.

With all due respect to your dad, hybrids are here to stay. Isn't the old saying "Work smarter not harder"

Not wanting to put dad,s nose out of joint but I rekon you should get some independant advice ,maybe from your local pro or a reputable custom fit center.Maybe have a go with a few demo clubs on the range.

good luck

Well Hybrids aren't going to go away, and they are also very good clubs. A titleist hybrid isn't super forgiving like some and it is quite workable, and you still have to hit good shots with these for good results.
I don't think they're cheating, you are just making it too hard for youself hitting 1 and 2 irons.

Sounds like your dad is caught in a time warp.

Here's the upside:
  • He's paying for it.
  • If you can learn to hit the two and three, you have a golf swing.

Would like to know how old and how tall you are to give a better advise. But for the hybrid talk, I would have to disagree with your dad like all the other guys. Samurais got extinct due to one reason... Gotta keep up with time IMPO.

I used to feel the same way about hybrids as your dad does but now I know what an asset they can be. I didn't necessarily think they were cheating but just not as cool to carry in the bag.

tell your dad that when he puts the mashie, niblick, spoon, and so on back in the bag then he can tell me hybrids are cheating. I am just curious but what type irons does your dad play? As for getting the same clubs he has... maybe, but probably not... get what feels, looks, and performs best for you.

The most important thing is to "Thank" your dad for buying you whatever set you and he decide is best....

For the record, I believe getting fitted is far more important than what brand you play. My swing flaws are just that... flaws, whether I'm playing R7's or Bang O matic's.

Nice

Getting fitted is the way to go, many options as far as price as well.

I am a "senior" golfer and could not bring myself to get the hybrids.

Last year I put the Cleveland Halo's in the bag and WOW!!!

I wish I had done it sooner.

Hybrids are for cheaters eh... I think the only guy on tour who doesn't use hybrids is Tiger. Adams makes a really good hybrid set. I think you'd enjoy them more than the r7 Draws.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
