Golf truely is a simple game, hit a ball, chase it down, hit it again, with the goal to get the ball into a hole in the least amount of shots possible.

Bobby Jones: “Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course...the space between your ears.”

Read the quote again. If you accept this, you will unlock the key to become a better golfer.

IT ONLY TAKES ONE THOUGHT TO PLAY WELL. Take one thought to the cours with you - "I can make this shot", "I am a great golfer", "Swing away at the ball, dont worry about the result"

I know I am rambling now, but it is so simple, it seems too simple, too good to be true. Does anyone share this feeling with me that this game is simple?

I believe it becomes much more simple when you develop a repeatable, natural-feeling swing that you can trust. I think sometimes people get way too caught up in swing triggers and trying to match positions in a pro's swing who may not be built anything like them instead of working on a few key fundamentals and focusing on tempo.

Once you have total trust in your swing, you can do exactly what you said instead of trying to robotically assemble each and every shot.

I have played all the major sports and then some growing up, including years of ice hockey, which I found to be the most physically demanding sport. But I don't think any one of them compares to the difficulty of golf. So many more mental demands and precision required to play golf.

My father in law who lives on a golf course said to me one day that "golf is the easiest game out there". He doesn't play of course. I laughed in his face and told him he has no idea what he is talking about. Of course he compared John Daley to a defensive end in football and said huge difference. I then compared Tiger Woods to a fat lineman in football. I do agree that football is more physically demanding but that is where it ends.

My eight year old daughter looked at me one day and asked why I played golf. The question was prompted by the fact that I had dragged my defeated bottom back to the house after having been handed said bottom by old man par during a particularily tough round. I was standing at the refrigerator looking for something to drink, disheveled, hot and tired. She looked up at me and, in her young mind, wondered why anyone would put themselves through what appeared to her as some unusually cruel form of punishment. I looked at her and said simply, " Because it

is so hard and it is such a challenge." She gave me a side long glance of incredulity, and silently walked a way, wondering, I'm sure, if the heat of that blistering day had melted what little brain was floating inside my head.

I have said the golf swing is relatively easy if we just let it happen, far easier said than done, however; in that there is a lot time to butcher it to death in our heads. But, as Arnold Palmer said, way more can go wrong on a golf course than just your swing or something to that effect. The game will never be easy or simple, some days the luck is all good and some days its all bad. That is golf.

I'm on the wrong side of 40, and I've played sports my entire life. I played baseball for 23 years. I played ice hockey until I was 32. Played football through my senior year in high school. Even dabbled in basketball a little. With the exception of basketball, I played all other sports at a fairly high level of competition. And while not intending for this to sound egotistical at all, I was pretty much a natural at all. Always made the various All Star teams/etc. and really didn't have to work that much on whatever sport I was playing.

And then came golf.

I took it up around my early 20's, and as you can see from my profile I'm a 12 handicap. Personally, I don't consider that "good". I'm used to being among the best at whatever sport it was. Obviously with golf...that isn't the case (no, I'm not talking pro level...best among my piers). I'm average. Nothing special. I'm not a natural. And guess which one I've become the most hooked on? It's the challenge...and I'll keep trying to get better until I physically can't play anymore.

Anyone who says this game is easy obviously hasn't played it much. Even the guys with natural talent have to work on it pretty hard...at least in my opinion.

last night on a TV show a character was having a midlife crisis. He was BMW-ing about his lack of a legacy, whatever that means. I told my wife that he should take up golf. When she said why, i answered "Golf kicks your butt over and over--you don't have time to whine about your life--you gotta go practice!"

That's a very true statement. I'm stealing that! ;)

    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
    • Day 151 1-11 flow work today. I've been doing all pause work, so Inwanted to get some rhythm going. Recorded.
    • a) No b) This MLR says: I doubt the MLR is going to affect their weekly league games, in other words.
    • So the question was posed today by some of my friends.  Is a pitch mark the same as a divot?  I thought NO, but they argued if your ball lands in another player's divot (made by club during a swing) this was the same as a pitch mark, i.e. the ball mark made when the ball lands
    • Original definition use to or still is how far offline you hit it. It might be better to think of it as consistency in retaining favorable launch conditions to optimize distance.   That heat map showed a gigantic 0-3% loss in ball speed. That is absurd. The true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. Good luck telling the difference if the sweet spot is under 3% in a sizable area. Especially considering variation in launch angle, spin, and outdoor weather.
