I would suggest not opening the clubface on your sandwedge or using a lower lofted club, like a gap wedge, so the ball comes out flatter.

Well said.

Also, taking a little bigger swing with a little more sand tends to yield a bit lower trajectory and less spin for me

Im going to try to explain this the best that I can. For longer bunker shots , I take the club back as far away from my body as I can and as flat as I can. I still hit about an inch behind the sand and it comes out fairly low and will roll.

When Im shortsided and have to get the ball in the air quickly, I bring the club basically straight up and then straight down, an inch behind the ball. That gets the ball up quickly and it doesnt travel as far. Hope this helps. Its one of the best tips I learned about hitting out of the sand.

Just something else for you to try. If you are a consistent striker, you can play the shot like a standard chip shot with your most lofted club. You must make clean contact with the ball first however, so fried-egg lies don't allow for this type of shot.

I "chip" with my lob wedge in the back of my stance and it comes out low and releases just like a "putt" when landing on the surface. I am not sure exactly why, I admit. I believe that the sand below the ball does not allow for it to pinch against the "ground" and the relatively slow clubhead speed of a chip doesn't produce too much backspin.

This shot is only for use when you are no more than about ten yards from the green however. In general, the biggest influence on how a ball releases is the angle of incidence (for any shot), so for maximum release you must use the lowest trajectory that you comfortably can.

Tom

i had a lesson in bunkers, and my pro said for some longer shots that don't have a lip and you want the ball to roll, put extra weight on your front foot

that should do it.

Take a lower lofted club, set up a bit squarer to the target and take more sand at impact, voila, no spin.
