I'm playing Bethpage in a few weeks. Will anyone please share their experiences? What can I expect regarding greens, andulations, etc? Should I use a caddie? Should I pack an extra shirt/socks?

Thanks, in-advance.

The Red Course. I've only been told that I need to be there at least an hour before tee time and to expect a 5 hour round.

First make sure of your tee time.If you plan on sitting in parking lot for bakery ticket during the week do not bother just start calling at 7 pm week before and you should get a decent time. You can walk the red and carry as I do all the time and I am 56 years old.It is a very fair and pretty course par 70 but the first hole is a bear so I suggest you hit the range before you start.Maybe on weekend 5 hours but during the week if you book early you should be under 4.Played it 3 times last week and it is in good but not great shape as we have had a lot of rain here on the Island{like it is pouring right now} so have an umbrella in the car and rain suit.

hold on to your green fee receipt.

last time i was there they had a 2 for 1 deal in the bar with a paid green fee--the only place i've ever seen an actual deal on beers at a destination course.

not exactly the wisdom you were looking for, but i'm full of good ideas nonetheless...

I love the red course. 5 hours sounds about right. Depends - maybe more, maybe less. 5.5 if you're unlucky, 5 if you're lucky.

I haven't played red this year, but the greens are pretty straightforward, nothing crazy in terms of undulations although some of them do slope downwards from back to front.

Lots of doglegs, both left and right. The back nine, one of my favorites, has a number of long par 4s. A great course, but tough to get on.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

I played the black course a few weeks ago and the red several times since ive moved up to north Jersey. The greens on the black are pretty flat but the course itself is almost unfairly long. Every approach shot seems like its 100 feet up hill. I belive the 13th hole? or rather is likr a 270 carry just to make the damn fairway from the blue tees. The fact that the under 55 degrees that day just made it play even longer. I shot 94 that day and felt it was the best I could ever do there. Extremley hard course. I actually enjoy the red course the most of the bethpage courses - its little cheaper and ALOT easier to get on. You can practically walk in with no tee time durning a weekday for the red or blue and get on if you wait for a bit.
