Looking for some help or local knowledge for an upcoming trip! May 24 - June 3rd, 2022

Here is my itinerary:

May 25th: land and play Balcomie

May 26th: Open, going to try and get ballot at Old Course

May 27th: Gullane 1 and 2

May 28th: Castle Course (Old Course Ballot)

May 29th: Panmure and Carnoustie

May 30th: 36 at Cruden Bay

May 31st: North Berwick and Glen

June 1st: New Course (Old Course Ballot)

June 2nd: Lundin Links and Elie Golf House Club

My question is this:

1) What courses do we need caddies for? Like are there some courses that you just need help with routing, local knowledge, etc. All of us going are under 10 handicaps, so we all can play, but just was wondering if we needed caddies at certain courses. I have some caddies reserved, like 1 for our group to carry someones bag and then just tell us where to hit it! I have caddies reserved at Balcomie (forecaddie), Panmure, Carnoustie, Cruden Bay for 1st round, and North Berwick. Also didn't know if most courses have yardage guides that would help if we didn't have a caddie.

Thank you!

That's a good amount of golf. I'm not in the UK and it's been awhile since I visited Scotland:

As @iacas said, that's a whole bunch of golf, you may need a wheelchair more than you'll need a caddie.  Its also a whole bunch of driving, I hope you're not doing all of that yourselves.

I think you're good with the caddies you've planned, and if you get on the Old Course, I recommend taking one there.  If you're hoping to take one caddie, and use him to give advice to all 4 players, be sure to take care of him appropriately.  He might be a little reticent, you may want to start the round with a bit of a cash bonus, I don't know.  Or if its an option, hire him as a forecaddie, so he's not responsible for a bag, rather his duty will be to take care of each of you.   If you're not taking a caddie, and you're playing that much golf, I strongly recommend using a (rented, or to use the local vernacular, hired) trolley, to take a little of the stress off your legs and back.  Based on my experience, every course will have a yardage book, commonly really nicely-done by Strokesaver.  I've played most of those courses, and have only used caddies on Carnoustie and the Old Course, you'll be just fine with the Strokesavers.

My question, where are you staying?  I hope you have a great time, be sure to report back to us.

Yea that is a whole bunch of golf in a short time. You are in Scotland, play 18 have a burger good glass of something and enjoy the day. But go for it; I would only request a caddie for the Old Course, and may I suggest you submit a ballot daily, then just change the other rounds around that?

Sounds like a great trip: do tell us about it, no foto's then it never happened.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
