I am looking for a new driver to replace my Snake eyes, I bought it for $20 and was dented...it is an offset design w/ a 1 deg. closed face...

What should I be looking for? I am a 20HC w/ a 88mph swing, carry 205-225. I tend to pull the ball, sometimes hook badly. I would like more accuracy over distance. I am confused w/ all the info.....low kick, high kick, etc.
I just want some creditable advice, before I trust the guys at the pro shop. They had me hitting a 9.5 deg driver, and I find that just can't be right, considering my current distance and pull/hook issues.

I have been looking at the Hibore XL 11.5, Insight BUL 12.5.

Should I stay away from all clubs with a closed face? I have read for days and find a lot of conflicting advice....

Thanks for all your help in advance...please only respond if you know what your talking about, I'm confused enough and don't need any false statements to make it worse....I don't mean to offend anyone, but most of you know who/what I'm talking about....thanks again

what is the usual ball flight of your driver when you hit it well? low, medium, high? do you get a low trajectory with good roll or does the ball carry a lot without much roll?

depending on these conditions, you can find out what suits you. I hook the ball too much sometimes too, and I have a x460 tour, and that has a slightly open face, so I dont think its necessarily the closed face of your driver, although it may eccentuate the hook a little.

If I was in your shoes, I would go to a credible clubfitter. Frankly, it's a lot less expensive to pay someone to help you get the right driver; one that's well suited for your game, than to keep drivers until you find one that works well for your swing.

Like Leek said, find a reputable club fitter. Most of them will be able to give you a shaft built for your swing. He or she will also be able to give you a driver head, degree and alignment that suits your swing and how you want to play.

It's great to be able to test different drivers at the retailer. However, you can't put a price on having a driver built exactly for you. The grip alignment and type will also affect play. Pay attention to that, too.

From experience, this process, depending on shaft, is about $250: The cost of a new, discounted driver. The money is well worth it.

Problem is .....I was at a reputable fitter....

I don't think the closed face has that much of an effect....I just brought up the question.

I mentioned this in another thread ....shouldn't you hit the same model ball to determine proper info..such as ball speed, carry, ball path, etc....seems to me your getting a bunch of useless data if your not.....unless of course balls really don't matter much.

Larlev,

You are absolutely correct. Balls make a huge difference. Take the ones you play with and think that you might want to play with. As far as a fitter goes, take a look at Max Out Golf Labs. They are California based company but have affiliated fitters around the country. A second opinion won't hurt.

How would you define a reputable fitter? The one you went to might be very, very good, or they may not be good at all.

PS..if it was Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, Dicks, Sports Authority or any othe large chain, it most likely wasn't a reputable fitter.

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
