I would concentrate on 150 yds, with an 85% swing. Figure out what club that is for you and then use the 10-15yd rule for club selection. The more you play and practice the more you will get a feel for this. There are many factors involved with determining exactly how "far" you can or should hit a club in given situations, and/or how hard you should be swinging.

On crappy ranges, I don't worry much about knowing the exact distances. A lot of the nicer ones will have keep the target distances updated as they move the ropes. This is where you should fine-tune your distance control. But when your just beating yellow rock flights, I like to test my eyes and estimations. There is a lot of value in honing the ability to "feel" what the right club and swing is.
