Just saw this article.  I understand what the problem was, what I do not understand is why the spacing of the grips is a problem.  would it somehow give an unfair advantage?  Why is this rule there?

I finally found the rule(below) but still do not know why there would be an issue with spacing less than 1 1/2 “

c. Two Grips

A putter may have two grips provided each is circular in cross-section, the axis of each coincides with the axis of the shaft, and they are separated by at least 1.5 inches (38.1 mm).

Possibly because such spacing could be abused to provide "notches" or something for your fingers to rest.

Thus in effect making a "contoured" grip, or something.

    • This can be great fun. Here is how we did it. Teams of four. Number off each person 1, 2, 3, 4. Then you go find each of the other people with your number and play a match against them. We did it on a huge putting green and they were 18 hole matches with hole numbers marked off. Play to a finish so playoff if tied. Count up how many points each team has and you have a winner.  The finding others with your number is a good way to get people talking to each other. There’s dead time to go get a drink and stuff. Much easier to go up to a group of people you don’t know and say “any 2s here?” than it is to just meet people. Automatic icebreaker. You do need quite a few people though to really make it worthwhile.
