Buying Used Golf Clubs

I'm looking at some Mizuno MP-30 clubs at the local Golf Galaxy. They show an average amount of wear but overall look like they'll last a while. Is buying used clubs a bad thing?

Not at all! Buying used clubs is an excellent thing! They are wayy cheaper and if your lucky almost as good as new, As a matter of fact im sure 8/10 people on this forum would suggest getting used clubs instead of new ones.

Both my driver and 3 wood were bought used. Both looked like only 10 rounds were used on them, and spent about a third of what it cost retail! If you can find a well taken care of club for half the price, I'd suggest jumping on it. As always, be careful with ebay, fakes are everywhere these days.

Double-check for authenticity even at retail stores. I saw a Golf Galaxy associate take 3 Odyssey Tri-Ball putters in as trades. He didn't ask the guy why he had 3 of the same putters, and only glanced at the model numbers to find the value in his book. Counterfeits of those putters are all over ebay. I can't be sure they were fakes, but the guy seemed giddy about getting $70 each for them.

I buy from powersellers on ebay. They usually go out of their way to avoid negative feedback, and they're more likely to get prosecuted if they're selling counterfeit stuff. Everything in my bag (except the driver) is used from ebay.

I love used stuff...matter of fact I just bought a Mizuno MP 50deg, MP-R 54 deg, and a 10.5 Insight BUL driver all for $160 off ebay. Stuff looks brand new.

I have purchased many used clubs. I actually prefer a year old driver, if I can get it for 1/2 the price, vs. buying the latest version of the same club. I also frequent Ebay.

I bought my driver used. You couldn't tell anyone had ever touched it, but it was $100 off.

I have to agree, like buying used cars, used clubs can be a great deal since someone else "paid" for the depreciation.

One caveat might be for wedges. Though I have yet to experience this, I've heard plenty of folks talk about "wearing out" the grooves on their wedges. If that's a concern, get your wedges new.

Everything in my bag at the moment was purchased used except the irons, which I bought before I knew you could buy used clubs. The putter is used from a friend, the rest from a golf shop around here.

If you like the ball flight and they are the right shaft, grip, etc for you, go for it! What's the return policy, just in case?

yep I bought my irons off of ebay used 2 years ago.

I would recommend it. I bought my irons from Golfsmith for half the price of the new set ($500 from $1000). The reason they were discounted so much was because they were demo clubs, so basically, the 6 iron and PW were the only clubs used, and of the two, only the 6 iron had some scratches. I would recommend it and then some if you find a good set. If you like them, get them...

Go ahead with the purchase. If, for any reason, you need to change shafts or regroove a particular iron, it will still be cheaper than purchasing a new set.

You can then use the saved money on lessons, green fees, balls, etc.

FYI...Everything in my bag was purchased used except for the wedges.

ALL of the things in my bag (to include the bag) are used. Why? I'm a beginner and the thought of me spending 1500 for what I have just to have them new is insane. I have gently used clubs that I got for at least 50% off and they are great. I guess when I get better and I want the brand new driver I will consider it - but for right now, used is the perfect way to go.

I've typically only bought new in my life, but for no good reason whatsoever.

In fact, of all things on this planet to buy used, I can't think of another product that would be as close to the same "new" quality as golf clubs. The heads and shafts are probably every bit as functional used as they are new, whether or not they have minor dents or scratches. Only variable would be grips and those are just dirt cheap to replace anyways. As long as you don't get a totally trashed set of clubs, buying used is smart and extremely economic in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I bought the clubs. I traded in my old TA5 Clevelands for $89. They originally wanted to give me $50 but I went home and checked the PGA value guide and then they changed it. So I got a decent set of clubs for $100.

I hit them yesterday and noticed a little difference with the clubheads being smaller, but they are so accurate every shot is within 5 feet of the other, unless i hit it fat or thin. My fade turned into a straight shot and a couple of draws. I just have to hope this is the way it'll stay. I also got 24 PROv1s used on ebay for $30 and they are like new.

So instead of spending $600 on irons and $90 on balls, I got both for $130. Now I can think about finally getting lessons.
