In regards to wedges, Cleveland golf has a great explanation of it.

The Low Bounce Wedge (0-10) is an outstanding choice for shots from tight lies and firm turf conditions. The combination of less bounce and narrower sole width lowers the leading edge of the blade to promote clean contact on every shot. Perfect for players who like to be creative around the greens and in the bunkers and who have shallow attack angles through impact. Less bounce and narrower sole width make it easier to open the face and hit high, soft landing flop shots.

The Standard Bounce Wedge (10-16) is the best all around wedge for playability in all types of conditions for all types of players. It is very versatile for players who like to be creative around the greens. The Standard Bounce is also an excellent choice for players who like to play an open or square face out of the bunker, and who have an average to slightly steeper attack angle.

The High Bounce Wedge (16+) is designed for play out of extremely soft turf conditions and sand shots. The combination of the wider flange and ample bounce angle prevent digging and create a smoother gliding action of the sole along the ground. Works exceptionally well out of the sand for those players who prefer to keep a square face through impact. Additionally, the High Bounce is an excellent choice for players with extremely steep attack angles.

Bounce is the angle formed by the clubface and the club sole. Basically if the sole of the club sticks out further there is more bounce. If the sole is lower-profile it has less bounce. Wedges with less bounce are easier to open up and hit a flop shot because they have less "bounce" sticking out under the club.

There's my best effort at explaining it.

Here's some good info on bounce:

I found the picture half way down on the first link very helpful. http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/equipment/wedge.html http://www.learnaboutgolf.com/educat...e%20angle.html

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
