Since we are uninformed, tell us what we are missing about what the us commentators said?

2 reasons:

1.well most of them said that AFL has no rules. it actually has many weak rules such as push in the back, high tackle(even if it is on the shoulder), holding the ball(tackled after not passing the ball and to be judged having prior opportunity to do so), holding the man(tackling or holding of jumper without the ball) i really could go on for 30 mins 2. if you are caught even wrestling with another player, you can get 2-3 weeks. players cannot afford to fight and stand up for their teammates like they did 20 years ago because there are stronger punishments for doing these things and if 2 or more players miss the next couple of games it can really derail a season. uninformed i do admit was a little harsh maybe. but having a different point of view on the game really was funny to see.

2 reasons:

The commentators saying "there were no rules" and such is only because that's how the game was promoted in America years back when they were putting on television here. They were more tongue-in-cheek comments. It was a marketing gimic. If I remember the commericals, right at the end some guy would say in a deep voice Australian "No Rules" Football. It was more of a "hey, this is a vicious game" statement. We know there are rules. I really don't have a comment on #2. I'd have to say the US commentators really are just not aware of the culture. Each sport has it's unwritten rule, such as hockey. If someone goes after one of your players, particularly an elite player, retribution will happen. It's only so the opposing team knows that they can keep doing that, etc..... Now, after saying all that, I'm not much for commentators in the first place. There job is to be opionated, even if they don't have one, so you get a whole lot of unneccessary garbage, and postering, yada yada yada. You get the picture.

yeah you're right. gone have the days where tribunals and umpires would let go some of the retalliation. back in the day if someone got hit unfairly, a teammate would usually make sure the offender would get sent to hospital.
