If you live in a gigantic city and it takes at a minimum, an hour to get to a short game practice area. Argh! Try being a golfer in big city (read pop: 8 mil+)

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

We converted our downstairs bedroom (carpeted) into a chipping/pitching range by placing a matress against a wall - it works wonders!!

Do you have any kind of yard at all? I will practice with my 62 and hit shots from the front yard over the house and into the pool...The soft nerf golfballs work well too for inside chipping...

Are there no par 3 courses near you? We're fortunate to have a real good one just a few miles from my house (see link).

That's where I go when my short game starts stinking it up. Sometimes I go play there just for the fun of it. It's a very challenging course and I can finish 18 walking in just over two hours.

Dude - I feel your pain!!! Esp. when you dont have a car - your options are limited. Luckily my local muni is 35 minutes (via subway) from door to tee :)

My apt. doesnt help either...barely any room to take a full swing with a wedge - tho i've found an angle in my living room at which to do it without breaking something...I also have a putting surface i practice with (chipping too w/ plastic whiffle golf balls). Also, I read somewhere (I forget) that dropping 6 or 7 golf balls into a driver head cover is supposed to be pretty close to the weight of a standard driver...so i use that just to stay loose with my swing when im bored...I feel kinda silly taking swings with it tho

I lived in Gotham (NYC) for the last year and recently moved back to Chicago, and I ran into the same problem. I did come up with a solution though. If you're in Manhattan, go to Chelsea Piers. I did that for a year, once a week, using a spare 56* wedge and 6 iron I left at my work. If that doesnt work and you want a good way to practice at no cost, find a park. I took a couple of wedges with me to central park and practiced 10-30 yards short game shots in isolated areas of the park. I had a few people join in, but no one really had a problem. I only got ushered away by a cop one time, but all the other times they didnt really care.

Unless you live upstate, LI, or somewhere away from Manhattan, dont even bother with the game. Manhattan may be great, but its a disaster for your game...

Alley Pond, off Northern Blvd. in Long Island just built a chipping area where their mini golf was (thank God, kids playing mini golf right behind the range was horrible). I don't know if they're opened yet, I was at the range last week and looks like it's pretty much done.

    • Day 293 6-24 Low point control work. Noticed most of my fat shots are coming when the shaft is steeper. Ill have a bunch of good swings and then have a real chunky, deep divot.
    • Day 4 (24 Jun 26) - Played the mid-week shootout - iffy day on putts as I had 35 and of late been in the upper 20's.   Greens recently verti-cut and they are a bit bump and long haired - no excuses as I need to learn to trust making the proper adjustments.   Overall a decent day with some solid long game shots.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
