I'm looking to get a new driver this year. While I'm not so naive to think that a driver that favors a draw will cure my slice (or push... ugly push), I am hopeful that it would help me stay closer to the center of the fairway. Can people with drivers weighted for a draw give me their feedback on them, and if they feel the weighting helps?

I'm planning on hitting a bunch at the Chelsea Piers golf fest next week. Based on reviews I've read, I'm going to look at the Ping G10 Draw and the Cobra L4V M. I'm also intrigued by the TaylorMade R7 draw that a lot of places have for $149, but since it's a discontinued model I don't have much hope of getting to try one out.

Thanks,
Andy

Last time I was at a golfsmith they had about 30 TM R7 draws. You should be able to find them easily. I use an R7 460 and I went from carrying a drive from 245 with my old driver to carrying it 275 with the R7. You should definitly try out as many as you can and make a correct purchase. May the force be with you.....lol

I was set on getting some draw clubs to help with my fade/slice, but I decided I would be better served by fixing my fundamental problems that were causing it. I'm glad I took that route instead.

Agreed. A draw bias only closes off the clubface. If you're coming across the ball (outside in) then a draw club is just going to cause you to hit pulls.

Last year I had a draw biased Ben Hogan driver and I was not expecting it to cure my slice either. It seemed to me that the draw bias was really just more like having a stronger grip only without acutually using a stronger grip.
It worked well for me and I liked it alot. I didnt hit many slices but I wasnt drawing the ball either. IMO I liked it and didnt think that it interfered with my learning the fundamentals or made me lazy about trying to do things the right way. Even if you have a draw biased driver you still have to put a good swing on it or you will still slice the ball.

Thanks Wisco... that's what I'm curious about. Assuming that I have good fundamentals (which I'm working on), I'm curious what the affect of the draw bias is. Interesting that the bias comes from a closed face- since I often have to remind myself to take the stronger grip with a driver, I'm hopeful that a draw bias will complement my swing. I wonder how much of a bias comes from the weighted drivers, like Taylormade. My guess is not much, but only one way to find out.

I just bought this week the Taylormade R7 Draw and so far am pretty impressed. I was hitting a slice about 60% of the time, the rest usually right down the middle with an occasional snap hook due to my own stupidity. With the new club, I was hitting very slight fades, dead center, or an occasional draw if I was trying. I can also really hit it long and was carrying about 275 - 285.

Try one of the older R5 draw versions with a regular shaft (see review on this site--well done and accurate). It definitely has some major left-bias and can be picked up for around $60 on E-bay.

I played draw drivers forever thinking it would help with the fade/slice. It definitely helped; however, once you really start hitting the ball well and FULLY releasing the club, you'll get frustrated with it ALWAYS going left--or, you'll over compensate and push it way out to the right.

Think about getting both a draw and a neutral version of a decent used driver (like the R5). Then E-bay the one you don't like.

Also, I don't know if it's only me, but I always felt like draw-weighted drivers lost a bit of distance compared to neutral drivers???

Happy ho'ing!!!

The TM Burner has a draw bias - maybe not much as an R7 Draw, but I find it excellent.

I'm personally not a fan of draw (or fade for that matter) weighted drivers. My recommendation, for what it's worth, would be a TaylorMade SuperQuad. You can configure it for a draw, but once you get things sorted out, you can set it back to neutral. It's been discontinued, so good deals can be had.

Like a lot of others have said I would not go with a draw biased club unless you plan on always having a slice/push to your swing. I bought the R7 425 and you can change the weights. Its awesome. Work on why you slice rather than trying to find a club to solve your problem. I had a Hibore XL before and i was carrying maybe 230 with it... I get at least 250 260 with my 425 and much smoother ball flight too.

So i was out on the course today at Saxon Woods, a relatively nice public course in Westchester county, and i played with my friend Adam and two high school juniors who play golf for one of the better programs in the area. One of them had a King Cobra offset driver (last year's 460cc model i believe) that he had just got re-shafted with a UST Pro Force 65. Anyways, I usually hit a fade and sometimes, that fade can be a nasty slice but after using this on three consecutive holes, I kid you not, I hit 295, 320 (down wind) and 300 all straight on the button. As soon as i went back to my regular flex 10.5º HiBore, my slice was even worse than before.

Do you think that the draw promotion in the wood helped me this much or was it perhaps the stiff flex of the shaft? Both? What companies make an offset driver?

Ditto on the Superquad. I can set it to draw weighting for now, and when I cure my slice which is in my swing, I can set it to neutral. For now, its on draw and helping me find fairways.

I think I have seen them at rockbottomgolf for $269 with 2 doz free 'caveman' golf balls (assuming these are absolute rocks!!)

So many drivers which are made today have 1 or 2 degree closed faces, including mine. The MOI in drivers is higher than ever. There is almost no reason to slice the ball unless one makes a very outside to in swing ( and in many cases, the correction is so good on mis hits that the ball is still somewhere in the fairway ).

Your solution may be a combination of two things: 1) a modern driver, such as a Cobra, TaylorMade, Callaway, etc. with some degree of closed face; and 2) striking the ball, through some instruction and practice, from the inside.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
