Yes, I know it will be hot!
We, my wife and I, will spend the first two weeks in June in Scottsdale. Scottsdale Camelback.
I have played for 40+ years, she is a beginner. Cost is a consideration but we plan to play about 12 times.
I found this website http://www.golfnow.com/phoenix?HID=228
that should be of some help but wondering about suggestions?

TPC Scottsdale, Raven, Grayhawk, Troon north, all nice courses and since you'll be here when is 1000 degrees you can play these big name courses for alot cheaper than normal. Some course will bring cold wet towels which will help but make sure you drink plenty of water and bring that sunscreen!

Wally, take a peak at the link, below. http://www.golfcourses.com/az/ Additionally, you might want to play any course that's on an Indian Reservation. They don't have any water restrictions and the course is bound to be lush. I played Talking Stick, South Course, last summer. It was in great shape. The course rating was 71.5/125 and was 6800 yards from the tips.

There is a very nice and reasonable course 20 to 30 minutes East of Scottsdale in Fountain Hills, AZ. Take a look at their web site - this is a very nice place - a reservation, but no housing development around it. Just you and nature! Go Early!

Check out The 500 Club. For the money, it is probably to most pleasantly surprised I have ever been. I did not expect the service and conditions at all. Not too far from you, though others mentioned are much closer.

I just came back from a week in Scottdale. My wife plays as well and we got 4 rounds in during the week. I happend to be partial to Coore/Cresnshaw designed courses, and really enjoyed Talking Stick (North) and We-Ko-Pa Saguaro. Neither are of the "target golf" variety that sometimes typify desert golf, so no heroic forced carries to deal with, and both are pretty friendly from the forward tees if that is important to your wife. Both are on indian reservations, so no intrusive housing either, just you the course and the desert. Both were is phenominal condition as well.

We played TPC as well this year, which we also played a couple of years ago. We were there this year as a neighbor joined us on the trip and he was interested. The plusses were that its a course the pro's play, and I really like the idea of going out with a caddy (a forecaddy). Ours was the guy who trains the other caddies, so he knew every inch of the place. The fact is thought that it is a completely manufactured course, you are not going to be wowed with the surroundings like you will at We-Ko-Pa. Worse was that the condition of some of the fairways was embarrasing, burned out spots in places. 10th hole comes to mind as the worst, but it was more than just that hole. Conditions everywhere else we played was excellent, so not sure what TPC's excuse was, but for the money you spend there, it's unacceptable.

We also played the Pheonician. Beautiful condition, a lot of elevation changes on one of the nines we played. Some of the holes run parallel to each other, so there were times there was just chaos as guys were on our fairway as we were trying to drive, etc. Nice, but not sure I would repeat.

We stay at the Westin Kierland when we are in Scottsdale. They have 3 nines, always in great condtion, and very friendly courses (i.e. lots of room off the tee, no forced carries, etc.). Played a twilight there with our son this year, and as always was an enjoyable time.

Talking Stick and We-Ko-Pa were the highlights and could not recommend those two places any more strongly.

Thanks again to everyone.
Have visited quite a few sites mentioned. Will plan the stay based on what I have learned. We can play every day except a one day trip to the G. Canyon.

I just got back from there for a company conference and I got to play Whirlwind-Cattail which is about 20 minutes south of the airport so i wasn't sure if you were considering going south but i thought this was a very nice course and got a discounted tee time (about $65).
