I've been Playing Golf for:  5 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 87
My typical ball flight is: left to right
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: slice

son is looking for some tips.. he is 14 years old and have a pretty good left to right flight but slices it once and a while.. just looking for tips to eliminate them..  he hits irons straight but struggles with driver and 3 wood once and a while

I recommend you take some videos in slow motion to better help analyze the swing. It is nice to have the full speed video, but essential to have the slow motion version. Almost all of the phones nowadays have slow motion option. It helps with face angles. Also don't wear black, hard to see body positions.

First thing is the posture. The weight is too far back.

I recommend reading this thread.

Then this one.

Second thing is he flips the face open REALLY early in the swing. He cups his left wrist and now he is going to battle an open clubface throughout his swing.

Ideally the face would match closer to his forward tilt (the green line).

Pretty open here and there will need to be compensations for that.

Just a few things to work on to start.

I agree with the stance. A good way to get a decent set up is to bend over at the waist first without bending much in the knees, so you get your shoulders over your toes a bit more. Then add a bit of bend to the knees. It should feel like there is much less weight in the heels.

With the driver, the ball is way to far back in the stance. It should be more inline with the left shoulder. Also, watch out for how the feet are oriented. You want to see the feet slightly flared open.

Finally, he doesn't use his lower body at all in the backswing. He has like zero hip turn.

    • I assumed we'd have two S - the foam balls and the stick. Yeah. Tough to mess up, always handy. Alas… And, yeah. I like some of the training aids for students, but on their own, left to their own devices… people use them badly/incorrectly a lot.
    • I was surprised the alignment stick didn't get an S. Seems like cost / benefit / risk of harm is about as good as you can get. Assuming you don't hit the alignment stick with the club.  I also could tell there was a struggle with the caveat "without an instructor". It seems some of the training aids that got lower marks can be useful in certain circumstances with certain students. I liked hearing comments, about when it was useful. The format allowed a nice conversation about those situations.  Some of these would also make for interesting videos. Gimmick clubs are also fun (to me).
