Love that Augusta National has put the final rounds online. Sated my tournament prep with the 95 final round. Some things that pop out.

The player’s sponsors , Hogan, Tommy Armour, Lynx, Maxfli, Ashworth, Buick, GTE.

Davis Love III using a persimmon driver had a 9 iron from 165 on 15 and a 105 sand wedge in 17. Norman on 15 had a 180 yard 7 iron. Ben Wright described it as “hopeful “ . They both made 4 on 15 to tie Crenshaw at the top.

Did you not know this has been available for a long time? I love watching Norman just collapse at the 1996 Masters. And Nicklaus at the ‘86 …..such great entertainment!

Yes it has.
I've really enjoyed it over the years.

My bag is an ever-changing combination of clubs.

A mix I am forever tinkering with.

I get a kick outta seeing Norman with all his logos, shirt, hat, teeth on his glove, ‘shark’ on his ball….haha. It’s like he was prepping for the green jacket….glorious flop!

Well, he won 20 PGA tournaments with 2 majors…and 70 something European events. But yeah.

Greatgolfer, not great winner. His agents created the world rankings to overcome his choking dog sundays. Even when he shot the low round of the day on Sunday in the Open he choked away the playoff. Two shots up with one to play he didn't even complete the final hole. I won't even mention 1996

. Back to the actual post, really enjoyed watching the 75 final round. When the broadcast picked up, 9 of the top ten were major champions. The other guy was some fellow named Tom Watson who I believe won the Masters twice as well as a few other major championships.

No.

  Quote

The initiative for the creation of the Official World Golf Ranking came from the Championship Committee of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, which found in the 1980s that its system of issuing invitations to The Open Championship on a tour by tour basis was omitting an increasing number of top players because more of them were dividing their time between tours, and from preeminent sports agent Mark McCormack, who was the first chairman of the International Advisory Committee which oversees the rankings. The system used to calculate the rankings was developed from McCormack's World Golf Rankings, which were published in his World of Professional Golf Annual from 1968 to 1985, although these were purely unofficial and not used for any wider purpose (such as inviting players to major tournaments).

Norman choked a few times, but he was also a prolific winner and a fairly consistent top five or even three golfer. More often his losses were a result of some bad luck.

    • I think "different" is the wrong word. I would suggest that the conclusion would be less in depth. It might also be more difficult to explain exactly what the coach wants you to do without the GEARS system. I've been coached on GEARS a number of times. What I can tell you almost certainly is that we get to root cause a lot quicker.  Often I can fix the part I'm working on and it will come at the expense of another part that I had already had correctly or previously corrected. The instructor can rotate the model and show you "Oh look this is better, but now it's caused this." When that happens we look for another feel. One that helps me get the part I'm working on correct, but doesn't mess up another part, or perhaps even helps improve another part.  Sometimes we find a feel that improves a few things all at once. Then that's like a Eureka moment.  So, while GEARS is very technical it's still a matter of finding the right "feels". Erik will say try feeling like you are doing this. Then we can look very deeply at a few of the components we are working on and decide if that feel is the right one. If not, we may try a different "feel".  This It's great when we go back an look at older GEARS data and get to say last year you were doing this by this much. Now you are doing this by this much. YAY! Improvement!  If time and money were no object I'd get a lot more coaching on GEARS. Unfortunately, I don't think it's likely that I can ever make a living playing golf. (Shut up. @billchao I can hear you snickering.) So I have to sneak my GEARS sessions in between earning a living, raising a family, keeping my wife happy, caring for my mother and/or my in-laws, my kids activities, etc...  I'm not sure it's revolutionary... maybe evolutionary. But I can tell you this; I've never had a GEARS lesson that I thought was a waste of time or money or thought it would have been as good or better without GEARS.  Not to say you can't have a good lesson without GEARS or there's no value in filming your swing. Those things are still valuable. GEARS is just better though. Having done quite a few lessons both ways for a while now. The only arguments I can think of against using GEARS are mostly centered around time and money.  Don't use GEARS if: You can't afford it You don't have time. Sometimes you are just after a quick spot check.... that's cool.  You don't have somebody who knows what they are doing to show you how to turn that data into ways to improve.  You want to take longer to improve You are worried about tearing the Velcro strap that holds the shoe covers on.  Otherwise use GEARS if you can.

    • It depends on too many things. Do I often give a different lesson than what I see with my eyes? Maybe not. But even still, is that lesson better, with the student able to grasp things like "how much" or "does that feel work" or "what does that change result in through the rest of the swing" much more solidly and quickly. The main advantage of GEARS is that it shows what you did. Measured. Accurate. To the tenth of a degree or inch. If you're with a good coach/instructor, it's a valuable tool. If you're with someone who doesn't know how to use it… it's just a cool side thing but little more.
