Irons Shafts - No Access to a Fitting Studio - Help Much Appreciated

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

first to give you some context, I am from Croatia and golf is not a very popular sport here therefore I don't have access to a fitter anywhere near me, and it would involve a multiday trip for which I cannot find time currently.

I play the Srixon ZX5 with the Nippon Modus Tour 105 Stiff flex - stock setup. My swing speed with a 7 iron is 76-78 mph, driver 96-98 mph. On days I am really feeling it and striking the ball well the 7i speed can go up to 80-81 mph, I guess its a confidence thing.

The shafts feel too stiff (imo) for me and I would like to get a bit more height in the ball flight. Most simply explained, when standing over the ball I feel like I really need to go after it to get a decent ball flight and when hitting a lot of balls at the range I feel fatigued which leads to poor striking towards the end of sessions. It is difficult to compare with anything else since I don't have access to multiple shafts and an actual fitter.

Could anyone give me some basic pointers as to what I should be looking for  (a fitter i know :D) in a shaft.  Unfortunately, the shaft change will most probably involve a new set as there is no one here that could do the reshafting of the clubs. I was looking at the Takomos, but am not sure at all what I would be looking to get as the shaft. Perhaps the KBS Tour Lite in Regular?

I know its not possible to say anything without actually trying the shaft but that way I cannot move forwards or backwards and I am stuck with what I have.

I’ve tested the Modus Tour 105 Stiff. It does feel stiff for its weight. Nippon makes a lighter shaft, the 950GH, which is a higher launch shaft that could work for you. I’ve played it in the past. It is very popular and feels very smooth at impact.

Golfworks has a comparison code for shafts. You can also email them and ask. They are very helpful.

+1 for the Nippons, I found them  very easy to get in the air. I have the Dynamic Gold 105 s300’s and have found they are not as high launching .

    • Day 343 - Mostly worked on pitching, but getting back to my full-swing work, as well.
    • Day 237 (26 Dec 24) - played 18 with niece and her husband at one of the local courses.  We were first out - so we pretty had our own pace of play.  First few holes were a struggle, but the groove started by hole 5.  The green side wedge game kicked in - had several kick in up and down pars.  Best of the day - had my first ever sandie birdie on #9. It’s a neat par three with a pot hole bunker - found it off the tee.  Had about a 22yd shot from the bunker to the flag.  Hit an easy shot out with the 54 that hit softly and gently rolled center cup.  Had several other close wedge shots into others that were close but no hole out.  Was a great day with the green side wedge game - and seeing solid fruit from the drills.
    • Day 16: 12/26/2025 A little more mirror work today. Then out to the garage net.  The first part of my PPJ swing thought is really starting to stick. The J still takes some focus. Plus, I'm still putting a priority on getting all the way to my finish.
