You swung faster but got a lower smash factor — more of the speed went into generating spin.

You'll have to keep experimenting. The type of ball, how clean the clubface is, where you hit it exactly on the face… it all matters.

Wow glad to stumble on this post. I have often been able to hit these when I am playing a lot and had no idea why. I could always feel it off the face like it would almost feel like I hit the ball thin and the ball comes out super low and checks. When I can't hit them reliably I have thought maybe its the bounce getting involved and redirecting the attack angle which kind of makes sense.

I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
