My trip to Pinehurst this year will only be with 4 people. So, I am looking for any interesting golf game formats to play. Especially for money. Free for all, 2v2, etc...

4-ball better ball is the classic and for good reason. If you want to change things up a bit you could do a 2v2 scramble. Wolf is also a good game for 4 people. If you're feeling aggressive on the gambling, you can play a game where you get points on each hole. You calculate the points by sticking the scores you both get together to make a 2 digit number. If the better score is par or better then that number goes first. If it's bogey or higher then the worse score is first. So if you're playing a par 4 let's say and your partner makes 7 and you have a 5 foot putt for a par, that's the difference between 47 and 75. Then you have like 10c per point (or $100 per point - whatever floats your boat).

My groups often play "sixes", fourball match play, and you switch partners every 6 holes.  That way you're partnered with each of the other players every day.

We played another new one for me on my last Pinehurst trip, and I don't know if it has a name.  Start with 2 against 2, pick at random, and set a unit for the "bet", a dime, a dollar, $100, it doesn't matter, but be careful.  One each hole, there are two points available to a team, 1 for the low individual score, 1 for low total score of the Partners.  The match is over when one team goes 3 points ahead.  This isn't first to 3 points overall, this is just like match play, a cumulative "up".  If you win 1 on the first hole, and lose 2 on the second, you're 1 down.  Then you switch partners and start a new match.  That part is simple, the next rules complicate it a bit.  If a team goes 3 up in just two holes, wins as quickly as possible, the bet is doubled.  If neither team gets to 3 up within the first 4 holes, the bet is doubled, and if it goes past 8 holes the bet is doubled again (that's really rare).  As I said, he careful with the "unit bet", things can get pretty big.  In six rounds in Pinehurst, I believe we had at least once where the winner or loser was up/down about 12 or 13 bets.  Like Sixes, with this format you'll almost certainly be partnered with each of the other guys in each round.

Let me know if you need any restaurant recommendations, and have a great time!

    • Day 24: 2026.01.26 Got home late so some slow swings outside. Looking to do some filming early this week to see how much I have managed to ingrain the new motion.
    • I remember hearing in the Arccos database, the average fairways hit with a driver is 60% and the average fairways hit with a 3 wood is 61%. Not really any difference there. It's vaguely plausible that people are more likely to hit a 3 wood on a narrower hole, so it may be that 3 wood is slightly more accurate, but it's rarely sufficiently so that the added fairway hit is worth it over the lost yardage.
    • I disagree. I don't think it is that noticeable.  There isn't that much of a fundamental difference between a driver and 3-wood to say it is more controllable. If both 3-wood and driver are 10 degrees offline, and you hit your driver at 275 yards and 3-wood at 250 yards, then you are 48 yards offline with the driver and 44 yards offline with the 3-wood. Maybe with other things like higher loft and higher spin it curves a bit less (less axis tilt). Even if it is 10 yards less offline, not sure that is that noticeable.  If a hole is that tight, and the shot zone is extending significantly into the trees, good luck? If it is a 415+ yard par 4, take your chances or play it as a three-shot hole and try to get up and down for par?
