I have a full set of Mizuno Comp EZ Pro 1-9 PW, FW, SW.

My 1 iron of the tee is consistently one of my best clubs. Does anyone else have this experience? I thought the 1 iron was very hard to hit?

I don't even know of any pros that carry a 1 iron. Some people are good at hitting them off the tee but struggle with them from the fairway.. plus they really don't go all that much further than a 2 or 3 iron.

1 irons require a decent swing speed to hit well and some are much easier to hit than others. Same idea with most Ping 2 irons, people use to like them because they were easy to hit. I would never carry a one iron anymore.. if I want to hit iron off the tee I will hit my 4 iron or 18* hybrid... easier to hit and they can be used off the fairway or out of the rough.

I have trouble getting rid of this club. My 1 iron is the only club in my bag that I hit consistently straight off the tee.

My Dad bought one at a yard sale a while ago as a curiosity. Now he just carries it with him when he takes walks in the neighborhood to keep dogs away. Does that count?

I have a couple, I acutally like to collect them

I have a Ping Eye 2 1 iron, and a Ping Zing 1 iron. Sometimes I play with them just for the challenge.

How does the saying go - "only God and Lee Travino can hit a 1 iron?" Or was it "Not even God can hit a 1 iron"

In my stand bag -

Well, explain this.

My 1 iron is consistently down the middle and 230-250 yards.

My driver is extremely inconsistent and all too much a fairway over. Yep I hit my 1 iron better than my driver (straighter)

What's the best club to play with during a lighting storm?

A 1 iron. Because even God can't hit one!

Well, explain this.

A 1-iron has a small head with very little loft. I doubt many were ever made with anything less than a stiff steel shaft. A 1-iron is generally considered the hardest club to hit. You, a 15 handicapper, claim you can hit it 230-250 yards, consistently straight. I have some theories but all involve the word "delusional".

Intersting that most of the people who swear by the 1-iron are 15-20 handicappers. SubPar

I used to love my 1 iron in high school, but as an adult I hit it pretty close in distance to a 3W. I can fly my 3i within about 25 yards of my 3W, an acceptable gap. Since the 3W is easier to hit than 1i, especially from rough, so I keep the 3W.

Yeah, I've heard that one many times.

Isn't a 1 iron like a 3 wood loft. 15 degrees. I would love to try one just for kicks.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
