Thrift Store Clubs

Anybody ever buy used clubs from a thrift store? I bought an old 1-iron yesterday for $1.98. The head is tiny. I'm looking forward to hitting it. I'm considering going back and getting an old persimmon 3 wood and/or driver. I also saw an old acushnet bullseye putter.

Anyone else ever do this? Any diamonds in the rough?

The only golf items I ever found at the thrift store were a nice pair of pink and green poly pant. I only wish I could still fit in them!

I found a wilson staff tour bag from the 70's at a thrift store. its all leather and in perfect condition. its black leather with gold piping, thread and lettering. it also had about 50 golf balls and a whole bunch of tees. I use the tees and the balls (the balls for practicing in the backyard). all in all it cost me 3 bucks. I could probably turn a nice profit by selling it on ebay.

I also bought a beauwood "All in" putter just to mess aroung with but I like it so much that it made it in my bag. It cost me $.75.

Finally, golf clubs at the dollar store!!! Too bad they don't sell gas for my vehicle there

I purchased my Ben Hogan irons for $10 at a TAG sale. Sometimes, you get lucky. You should be fine.

A buddy of mine uses his grandfather's old irons, but replaced the woods with purchases from a thrift store about two years ago. The clubs are in good condition, but the shafts are wrong for him. He didn't know about shaft flex then, and doesn't now.

That having been said, if you know what you're looking for and don't mind a little risk, garage sales and thrift stores are probably great places to pick up golf stuffs!

I get lots of stuff at thrift stores. My irons are thrift store beauties (Ram FX2 GT steel, graphite shafts, $1/each), my classic Golden Ram Axial Tour Grinds ($18), all three of my golf bags (between $5-12 each), yesterday I picked up three wedges (Ping I3 blade SW, Titleist 704CB W wedge, Ram Tom Watson Troon Grind 58*, $3/each).

I also got 10 dozen balls (9 dz. were prov1 or prov1x) for $3.

The thrift stores here in Portland have better stuff than most places I've been. Lots of people here don't bother to do a tag sale, they will just donate stuff. There's also not really a stigma about shopping there either. You see plenty of brand new expensive cars in the parking lot. The complaint I have is that the stores don't do a good job of keeping sets together, so you'll see a set of great irons that is missing one club somewhere in the middle.
