I have a Taylormade r7 460 driver with the stock shaft. I really like the club but I have heard lots of people on here saying that the re*ax shaft is really bad, so I was considering going to my local store and getting fitted for a new one. Does this seem like a good idea, and what would I gain by doing this? How would a new shaft help me?

I didn't mean to hijack your thread but Re* Ax shaft is bad? how come? Bad how? I've never heard such thing. My friend has R7 460 with standard Re Ax and he drives the ball just fine, well maybe a bit too far

. He always outdrive me. Steve

A little more info would be good for the post. You say you really like the club but want to change the shaft? In order to change the shaft I would think one would have to have a problem with it. My current shaft is way too soft or stiff, etc.

When I look for a shaft, I want one that will make my shots most consistent and give me the control I want. The stock shaft might be fine, if it is the proper flex. But messing around with different kick points and flexes is fun, might give you a better understanding of your swing, might help your consistency.

A low kick point will help you get the ball in the air quicker. I use a mid kick point, because a low kick point (like the graffaloy pro launch) will baloon on me a bit. A stiffer shaft might give you more control, as there is less bend in the shaft, but less distance as the clubhead won't "whip" as much.

Bobby Jones used hickory wood shafts, you don't need a new shaft to play well. But it doesn't hurt to check out some other shafts. Also, when checking out other shafts, keep in mind that your stock shaft might be just fine.

I am in sort of a shaft predicament also, but don't want to hijack your thread.

How can I post a new thread? Just joined and don't have permission...

Is there a min amount of posts before being able to post a thread??

The reason I ask is because I like my shaft, but I didnt know if I was missing out on something with it instead of one that everybody likes.

Re*Ax is made by fujikura, which is a fantastic company. I can't imagine fujikura is making bad shafts for a huge contract like Taylor Made. I have a fujikura shaft and I love it.

There may be another shaft out there with specifics that you prefer (different kick point, different flex, etc...), but in terms of quality and craftsmanship you can be confident that a shaft made by fujikura is good.

Do you want to change out the shaft just because you heard some people say it was no good? You should only be changing out the shaft is it doesnt accomodate your swing....Who cares what other people think.

Again, I like my shaft, but I was just wondering what the benefit of one that you all said is good would be!

I absolutely agree 100%.

I changed my shaft twice in my driver in the past year. I don't regret it, but from the experience, it's a completely NEW club when you change that shaft. I switched b/c I wanted a shaft that complimented my game/swing. So from and avg last year of around 280 with 1 or 2 300 yarders in the round... but sprayed... I went to a Diamana White Board which gives me consistent drives in the 260's - 280's and it's STRAIGHT. Who cares about distance and what everyone else thinks...as long as it works for you...do it. I played with a dude the other day that was a 2 handicap. he didn't have awesome clubs. he had 20 year old rusted joints....but hit well with them... everyone's so concerned with what ppl think of their clubs, swing, etc... f*** em. Sure, I love having a nice set of clubs...but i've spent hours on trials to figure out what fit best for me... if the standard re-ax shaft works for you..then it works... for me, it feels too whippy.... if you're cracking it straight..then you're on point...if you want to change things like control ball flight/trajectory reduce spray on mishits, then I'd say look into changing the shaft.

Smart words. The RE-AX shafts work fine - ok so some people find a custom shaft better but a lot of it is merchandising and people wanting to use what Pro's use. My pro has sold me 3 drivers with RE-AX shafts, and he has used them in the past.

I am really big fan of AccuFLEX golf shafts as well as fujikura's.
I like the AccuFLEX for distance and the Fujikura for more control, but Graman makes a very fine shaft as well in the UL540 Limey, it specs out to be just like the Diamana,
but for about $200 less.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
