I'm interested in putting my girlfriend a set of clubs as she's expressed some interest in the game. I could easily buy a set, but I want to find the most economical way to get her started (as she's likely to quit) AND I've got a ton of equipment that is just gathering dust (ie, tommy armour 845s) that i'd like to find a use for.

My question is, would it make sense for me to get some new shafts in those irons and wedges? Will the weighting and sizing be too difficult to figure out? She's 5'4". Also, I'd like to have a set that is good enough for her to continue to play and improve with if she so chooses...

A lot of women's clubs are lighter all the way around, not just in the shaft. And shorter, too. Plus, do you really think your gal will hit a 3-iron to start? A lot of $300 women's sets aren't bad, and you're gonna spend nearly that much money re-shafting and re-gripping anyway. Spend $300 and buy her some of those Crystal Ladies balls for $20, give her an old bag and an old putter of yours, and she'll be pretty well set with better equipment.

Erik,

I am improving in my game and have gotten to a consistent low 90s recently, something that is good considering in May i was shooting in the 1teens. Anyhoo...want to get more distance. Ball striking is getting better...I was wondering if maybe stiffer shafts...maybe steel shafts on my irons? I'll hit my 7 iron about 125, and I have factory graphite shafts. How much does that have to do with it? My swing is not real slow. I find my ball striking is way more consistent when I slow down. My old clubs had steel shafts and the weight wont be a problem. Another question....do you use a 60* in the sand or just a sand wedge?...or any wedge....just depending on the shot? Thanks for your time...Brandi

This thread's about Josh getting clubs for his girl, so I'm gonna keep the response short. If you want to start a new thread for more answers, go ahead...

I use anything from a 7-iron (rare) to a PW (less rare, but still rare) to a SW (40% of the time) to a LW (50% of the time) in the sand. Primarily depends on the distance I've gotta hit it and how much green I have to work with. Without knowing your swing speed(s), it's tough to say. Graphite shafted irons typically go further (lighter weight) but may not be as accurate (more torque).

...She's 5'4"...

Before I can help you I have to know what are the other measurements ?

ok, but seriously - I've a friend who's wife started playing with "his old clubs" cut down 2" (she's rather shorty). After 3 years she got the first "female" set and you couldn't belive the s$%^t he had to listen to about "I can't belive you made me play with these lead-loaded piece of s..t!" What she ment was, that the weight difference was huge. Also forgiveness is much bigger part of the design of "entry level female clubs". My wife started with X-14's and lady gems shafts - even I couldn't hit that off center If she's commited enough - make the investment. If she quits - oh well, there is always eBay to minimize the damage. I could hook you up with brand new set of X-18's for about $500 - $599 (don't remember the exact price, but it's pretty close to a dealer price - let me know and I'll find out.

That's not a bad idea...

    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
    • I had an interesting one yesterday, a local qualifier for the US Senior Open, at the Cascades Course at the Homestead.  Well, first things first, the VSGA arrnged for the officials to play the Cascades on Monday at the players' practice round rate.  Its lots of fun, rather old-style (built in the 1920s).  anyway, a player missed a short putt, and (apparently embarrassed) took a step to be ready to tap the ball back in.  The ball lipped out, and hit the player's foot.  I was nearby, and they waved me over, and asked "What do we do now?"  I was pretty sure of the ruling, but asked them to wait for a few seconds while i double-checked.  I did have it correct, even though its one of the more confusing rules in the book right now.  I'll leave the correct answer out for now, in case anyone wants to guess, or research it, and post their ruling.
