Wedge Progression

So I'm waiting anxiously for the new Cobra FP II's I ordered today, but I have just one question for you guys. The set comes in 4 through a Gap Wedge, which I don't mind since all my 3 iron did was fish balls out of the creeks and streams. However, I've never carried a gap before, so where does it fall? I currently carry a PW, 56* sand and 60* lob. I'm assuming it falls between the PW and SW?

Yeah usually a gap wedge is around 52 degrees depending on the loft of your pitching wedge. The Cobra FP iron's pitching wedge is 44.5 degrees so you might want a gap wedge right around 50.

You may want a 51 degree since your SW is 56 degrees though. Or you could get a 50 degree GW and switch from 56 and 60 to 54 and 58 to make it more evenly spread out.

You are correct, it does come between the PW and the 56*, and it is normally about 50-52 degrees. I really like mine and use it a lot.

I just got the FP's this spring and LOVE them. I got 4-SW, skipping the Gap. I had about a 40yd hole between the PW & SW so I looked up that chart and saw the PW & SW were 10deg apart, with the gap falling nicely in the middle, so I ordered one and BAM it's my 120yd $$ club!. PW49.5 GW54.5 SW59.5 I hope you enjoy your FP's as much as I have thus far!

Yeah, between PW and SW. Here's why:

The Gap Wedge is essentially what a PW (or just W) used to be. At some point, companies starting moving their wedge from 50-52° to 46-48. This allowed them to say that you hit it a club farther, and you could hit more greens with driver wedge. Then the 9-iron got the loft the 8-iron used to have, and so on.

But, what do you do for the distance W used to be? You can't move up the SW; that destroys some of what it tries to do (although you *can* use a GW out of the sand). So the GW gets introduced.

And then, since the new 3-iron is tougher to hit, the sets went to 4-G instead of 3-P. Same clubs, different names.

They new have started to do this again. The PW on my r7 XD irons is 44* as opposed to the 46-48 on most sets and so there is a big distance gap between the PW and my 52* wedge. For this reason I'm going to have to buy a 48* wedge to go between them. This trend has to stop!

I would've preferred letting myself think the added distance was due to my steady progression as a golfer and a man, not due to labeling shenanigans.

One of the things I was looking for in the recent irons purchase of mine was that the PW could be no stronger than 46. It was actually a question I asked at demo days, after thinking I was hitting the Cobra UFI PW to the same distance as my then-current 9-iron, only to find out it was 43 degrees.

Sorry man. For what it's worth, your progression could be happening too - compare the lofts of your old and new irons. Your old ones might have been a similar marketing - it's been a while since they made the changes.
