Not at all. At this stage of your game, the ball won't make a huge difference. Also try Top Flite...good balls for the price!

I have been using Rock-Flite.... Oops, I mean Top-Flite.... D2 Feel balls available from wal-mart for $15 / 15 balls. Pretty good balls, I'm not good enough to really know, but I feel much more confident using them than someone's dirty old Titleist I find in the woods OB. Silly, probably.

I have a bag full of old dirty balls I've found while looking for my brand-new, lost Top Flites, and I keep buying new Top-Flites rather than use the balls I find, even though most of them are Callaways, Nikes, Titleists, Srixons, and so on. I suppose I just like to have the same feel around the greens and not have the old, different balls react differently on me.

Anything by topflite will suit you, also try buying lake balls, get fair quality balls for a decent price.

Any cheap balls you can find will be fine if you're just starting out but I'd stay away from lake balls. I think it was golf digest that did an article on water logged balls producing significantly less distance and imo the ability the drop and stop a ball isn't really practical for most beginners but distance is.

When I started playing I used the Utra 3-piece wound balls and had good luck with them....fairly cheap and not a bad ball.

Were I starting over again today (seems like I sort of am) I'd use something like the Precept Laddie balls (24 balls for $20).

I've played enough Top Flights...to own freakin' stock in the company.

Get something that you like the feel of around the greens and then just work backwards from there.

Seems like everyone tries to learn the game backwards in my opinion...focusing on driving.

Find a ball that you like to putt and chip....work on the various wedge shots...everything else will flow from there.

I'm getting funny about balls as I get older....I detest hard ones and am showing a strong preference for better feeling balls that check and work out better on the greens.

I just picked these up after I lost 8 MaxFli Fires in my first round. The MaxFlis were $20 a dozen, so I thought 3 dozen for $15 would be a good investment till I can start keeping up with the ball better

$5 a dozen? That's about how much one Pro-V1 costs.

That's a pretty decent buy and you know where to go to get more.

I bought some Intech Beta Ti about a year ago and they worked fine. For a golfer who just started playing there won't be the slightest difference with much mor expensive balls.

They are very very cheap, you get your 3 dozen under $20 (which is almost your $15 for 3-dozen budget lol). Its a great ball since you can loose a lot fo them and never feel guilty for doing so.

Here is the link at Amazon in case you're interested

If you're losing about 8 a round I'd go with the top flite D2 feel, its a good ball for the money (about $1 a ball). When you start to want something with a little more bite you can move up to the top flite gamer which is a similar ball but 3-piece and you won't break the bank if you lose 3 or 4 a round ($20 a dozen).

I'm losing between 0 and 3 a round now and I tend to play $20-$30 dozen balls (gamers, HX hot bites or "players" balls that I find). I also usually find a good players ball each time I play so that offsets a loss. Be careful about lake balls or beat up balls you find - one time I found a Prov1 in a dried up creek and it only went about 200 off the driver (normal is 230-240) - totally waterlogged or something. I also want to try the e5+ but I haven't run out of hot bites or gamers yet.

"PlayItAgain Sports" has some used balls complete with a bin full of ProV1s for $1 each here in gainesville florida. I was amazed when I saw it, 75% of the balls in the bin look as though they have never been touched, brand new clean white color. They also sell Callaway and Nike balls at .75 a pop, and have a huge bin with random balls at 25 for $7.00.

Just got back from my first round with the Dunlop 36 pack.

Lost 3 of mine, and lost one I found. I found it in the edge of the water, and used it for the two holes with signficant water hazards....and it wound up back in the water.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
