Two things happened in my past 5 days of golf.

1) I broke 50 on 9 holes for the first time by shooting a 48. I probably could have done a little better even. I used a 6-iron for the entire par 3 18th because it was raining and I didnt wanna take the time to run back to the cart.

2) This means nothing to you guys, but its a big moment for me. On a par 4, my drive went kinda short and right as usual. I was faced with a 150 yard shot over water to the green. At my skill level, I can't hit ANY of my irons 150 yards, so I decided to chip it to the edge of the water. I picked out my 5-iron, played a little bump and run and stopped it about 5 feet from the edge of the water.

That left me with about a 50 yard pitch to the green. I took a deep breath, swung, and watched the ball drop 5 feet from the hole. After all that i preceded to two putt.

That pitch was my best golf feeling thus far.

Yes it is. I actually pulled out my 4-hybrid for the first time today too. I've been working with it at the range, but have been a little shy with it on the course because of bad slicing on the range.

I hit a screamer that was about 8 feet off the ground the entire time. It was a great shot. I might pull it out more often

. . . I probably could have done a little better even. . .

1st, congratulations on breaking 50!

2nd, re: "I probably could have done a little better even." IMO, this is one of the things that keeps us coming back - we always think we could have done a little better even when play our best round to date. I don't think I've ever played a round when I didn't think I could have done a little better and think that applies to just about everybody I've ever golfed with. 3. Now get down to business & set your goals on a "44".

Brilliant!!!! You played your odds. That's effective course management, and you should be proud you played it the way you did.

A lot of people at your level would have tried to hit their second shot to the green. With a dunk in the water (high probability), that would be two in the water, three out, hitting four from where you were. With a good pitch and a two putt (like you did), that's a six. You saved a stroke with a five. Smart play. Nice job!

Not to mention a ball Not that expensive because I buy the Dunlop pack of 3 dozen for $15. Less than $.50 a ball. Still, I don't wanna go losing them.

Great Show! The only mistake you made was playing the one whole entirely with a 6 iron!

Take your time!

I wouldnt have if it was just me. If I were alone, I would have played through the rain. My girlfriend was driving the cart that day, and I didn't wanna make her sit in the rain. After all, she DID pay the cart fee

Congrats man, you should be proud of yourself. It is nice to break a barrier like that, keep up the good play. I have a buddy like you who has a hard time hitting over water from 150ish and I encourage him to lay up as well, smart play for his skill level. I always ask him, "was that your Sally wedge?", it's all in good fun though, congrats again bud...

Awesome! That's my current goal, is breaking 50 on a 9-hole. If we don't get any more rain today, we'll be playing tonight. So, hopefully I can match you.

A 48 is fantastic. And, here's another +1 props from me on "laying up". I've done the "superman-wannabe" trick and tried to fly over it, only to end up right in the middle of the water. Good for you for making the right move.

I agree, for a new golfer that was a really good decison. Well done. Course managment like that when you have straitened out your swing will lead to birdes and pars instead of bogeys.

Breaking 50 is a big deal. I think it was harder for me to break 50 than it was to break 40 my first time. Congrats!
