Me and Pops were playing 9 holes today and Minor Park was packed! It took 2 hours 45 minutes to walk this short course. Some guy jumped from the 3rd hole to 6th hole as me and Pops were finishing up 6. Then he asked if he could play in with us. After a long pause I told him no. He chirped back "it doesn't matter". After I teed off I told him the reason we didn't want him to play in was because we saw him jumping holes and that it was not fair. He said he didn't care and skip 7 and went to play 8. What do you think about this?

If the course isn't packed, I dont really mind, but people trying to enjoy a full round only to see people trying to cut into them to get the round finished isn't polite. When the course is packed and you see people jumping holes its not right.

Golf is supposed to be played in order. 1,2,3,4, etc. Not every odd numbered hole.

I don't know what to think/feel. You had 3 holes left to play, some guy wanted to play them out with you. I can't see how that would have affected your play. As long as he only played as many holes as he paid for, I don't know what is or isn't fair.

I know it is acceptable to skip a hole when going around slower players and a guy golfing single is gonna golf quick so him jumping holes doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. Then again I am not a rules/ettiquete expert either. I also tend to approach life from a live and let live perspective as well.

Me - I would have let him golf out with us. I don't see an issue as to how it would affect my score. I am guessing that this was simply a round for fun, that is the enjoyment of the game for the game itself?

ETA: (saw Dent's post) I can understand a busy day and then holding up a foursome by playing alone, perhaps it is more unfair to force him to play on his own (to the other golfers). Including him into your twosome would have negated any negative effect he had on a busy course?

As to order in golf, sure it is preferable to golf in order but do course designers really think about hole order (other than layout as the land/budget allows) when designing a course? Serious question.

People jump holes all the time at our course and as long as they don't jump in front of me and play slower than me, it doesn't matter. I would have let him finish out with us.

Ditto. He wasn't jumping

in front of you , he was just trying to join you from what it sounds like. I jump around on my home course all the time. Perhaps he was a member at the club (or a "season pass" holder if it's not a private or semi-private club) and it didn't matter how many holes he played so long as he was home by a certain time or not being held up and just standing around by others. I jump around all the time when it's slow and I'm a single. I always look for gaps, but on occasion when they're not around and I really can't stand to just "stay in place," I might find a two-some or a three-some to join.

If you are just hanging out with your Dad, though, there are times that you just want it to be the two of you. I know that my Dad and I don't always communicate, but if its just the two of us we do a lot better.

I guess I'm saying that I understand asking the guy to NOT join you.

But, if he isn't affecting your game (ie: holding you up), then I don't see the problem with letting him skip holes. If he isn't too concerned about playing in the correct order, and he isn't bothering you, let him go on.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
